Ultraman Ace!

Finally moved on to episode 9 today. I LOVE the monsters in this show! This episode's monster hid in photographs as a way of moving from place to place without anyone realizing they were looking at the real monster, not just its picture! Nice!

And MAN, Hokuto is cold! He slapped the cute photographer chick silly! D:

And hey! The henchman-spy-dude from Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla '74 played the newspaper editor! Sweet!

Onto episode ten and Psuedo-Goh!

So let's see here, where was I?

Episode 10 was solid. I loved Hokuto's expression when he realized Goh didn't know how to use chopsticks AND WAS THEREFORE AN EVIL, NON-JAPANESE IMPOSTER! D:<

(Which he was.)

Episode 11's monster had probably my favorite disguise ever: It separated its body into ten parts that turned into ten hot ladies! D8

I love how Hokuto is totally okay with this. Poor Minami, though. :(

Oh, and another great cameo from an oldschool Toho veteran in episode 12, this time by this guy:

I can't remember his name for the life of me but he played the interpreter in King Kong Vs. Godzilla, among other things. In Ace, he shows up briefly, ONLY TO SOON GET BRUTALLY MURDERED BY A CACTUS. I'm not making this stuff up! It's crazy, man!

And so we move on to the reason I started watching Ace to begin with: The best part about episodes 13 and 14 was not all the Ultra Brothers getting crucified (which is still hilariously disturbing) but instead, this:

I laughed and laughed and laughed until I cried. This series is solid gold, let me tell you.

Now I'm into the trilogy of episodes called the "Summer Kaiju Series." Episode 15 wasn't too special aside from a possibly schizophrenic kid who could hear his father's (?) voice through a seashell. Episode 16, however, features a man turning into a violent cow monster (COWRA! D8 ). It's pretty hilarious how he EATS PEOPLE but no one ever mentions this once he's healed up and turned back into a regular human like it never happened. DUDE. YOU DEVOURED THEM WHOLE. FEEL GUILTY.

OH. I know I've posted this several times elsewhere but it deserves to be posted here in the actual Ace thread:

XD

Man, I love this series.

You mean "Agent Number One?" That would be the late Daigo Kusano (who passed away in 1982), who was also the main villain in Mirrorman, and one of the good guys in Koseidon!

Senkichi Oomura! A great Toho vet, who played comical characters and supporting villains, and was also in several Tsuburaya shows, including his role as the drunken bum in Episode 2 ("The Green Terror") of Ultra Seven! He passed away in 1991.

And so we move on to the reason I started watching Ace to begin with: The best part about episodes 13 and 14 was not all the Ultra Brothers getting crucified (which is still hilariously disturbing) but instead, this:

I still think that is so disturbing, but nifty at the same time!

ZOMG. Momotaros has posted the next four episodes of ACE on his forum!

HELL YEAH.

Now I can finally watch more Ace!

*promptly downloads*

Did I mention this show is, like, my favorite ever?

HOKUTO. SHE'S THIRTEEN YEARS OLD. FIFTEEN AT BEST. WHY ARE YOU GETTING SO FLUSTERED?! Christ, man, I thought more of you than that! It's funny watching you get so flustered over every pretty girl who bats her lashes at you even though Minami obviously has a thing for you but this girl's not even legal, man! Come on!

Okay, so Ultraman Ace continues to be, like, the best thing ever. Episode 19 wasn't the greatest episode of the series but it was still exceedingly entertaining. Hokuto? Thank you for being the only person who actually believes children when they say they see a monster and everyone else laughs. I just want one episode to end with a child screaming, "THE MONSTER JUST CRUSHED YOUR HOUSE, ASSHOLE. WHO ARE YOU CALLING A LIAR NOW?!" to his mother/father instead of the usual teary reunion.

In this case, the monster was a giant Kappa-inspired creature (aptly named "King Kappa") whose water reservoir takes the form of a large swimming pool. An exceedingly creepy elderly couple invites the neighborhood children to swim in said pool where the beast - hidden underground - sucks them down into a whirlpool, spitting them out later having done... something. Whatever happened, they no longer have bellybuttons and later they contract a baaaaaad case of some seaweedfungusthing. That scene's pretty freaking creepy.

Unfortunately, it's becoming obvious to me that the producers of the show are beginning to minimize Minami's role and focus more on Hokuto. As much as I love Ace, it's really sad to watch now, knowing that her days on the show are numbered.

Also, King Kappa gets sliced in half and is apparently made of sweet potato.

Next time: A FLYING CRUISE SHIP WHOA. And a guest appearance by the guy who will go on to play Ultraman Tarou's raging madman idiot of a host: Kotaro!

So episode 20 wasn't particularly amazing on a story front (I'm still not entirely sure what happened exactly) but it was VERY pretty to look at. Lots of great miniature shots and a very cool monster design.

We start with Hokuto on patrol. Everything is norma-- HOLY ****, FLYING CRUISE SHIP. HQ thinks you're a crazyperson, Hokuto, but you know you're not dreaming! Whatever, the captain tells you to take a vacation, so you go out boating.

I AM MORE DASHING THAN YOU COULD EVER POSSIBLY COMPREHEND.

...and he goes to do some investigations of his own instead of taking a proper vacation. Whadda workaholic! While on the ship, he meets a possibly bi-polar shiphand played by the future Ultraman Taro. Guy's crazy-obsessed with his ship and winds up putting his life on the line to save it from the monster by using a teeny-tiny little hack saw to SAW THROUGH STEEL CHAINS THE THICKNESS OF HIS FIST. Insane, I tell you!

After the two of them meet, I kind of lost the story. The monster was making the ship levitate? Yapool wanted to destroy the ship? Shiphand dude has a strange fondness for pepto-bismol-colored shirts? Whatever, the monster battle was still pretty fun and it was all shot very nicely.

Here's looking forward to episode 21 and the CERATOPSIAN PRIESTESS. I love this show.

Also, guys, if you haven't ever seen Ultraman Ace ever, go to the downloads forum and snag Arislan's subbed copy of episode 1 at least!

Oh my goodness, this thread is made of win! I love this back then when I was still in Grade school. Another one of those epic old tokus like Kamen Rider Black.

Can I dig thread? So far this Ultra series is not subbed yet till today? Anybody there planning to sub this series?

There are partial-series subs on nyaa actually. But they are a "scrub of malay english subs" and have been on hiatus since 3 months ago but will likely get completed.
