Ultraman Ace!

Ultra Seven isn't that difficult to come by. Also there are recent new R2 DVD releases that are quite affordable at 19-20 dollars ...or there's always REQ/reseed on ADC heh

So I saw episodes 5 and 6. Both were great, though I still think 4 is my favorite (must be the psycho comic artist! XD). As far as five goes, I loved Zophy (yay!) swooping in to save Ace at the last minute and the monster designs were pretty cool. Like my friend who gets squeamish when he sees people getting eaten by monsters, I shudder every time I see a monster dissolve a person to their skeleton. Cold, just cold.

Six was nothing special, but solid, and it had the kid from Ultraman Taro in it! And that face on the dad's hand was CREEPY AS EVERYTHING. What the hell. This is a kid's show? I love it! My hypothetical kids are SO totally watching this! 8D

Going to watch the 7-8 two-parter tomorrow. Can't wait. :D

I love the monsters in #5, especially the Gilon dude because he's voiced by Sawa Ritsuo of Kamen Rider (voice) fame. And remember him, because there's a monster muuuuuuuuuch later (#29) that uses a bit of the same design. It's apparently just the production crew saving some money, but they hit on something very cool I'll bring up again when you get there.

And I dunno if you recognized him, but #6 had Kobayashi Akiji! After playing Muramatsu in the original series, he does a guest appearance in the next 3 (as well as having been in an episode of Ultra Q.) I associate him with Ultraman about as much as I do with Kamen Rider, even if he's in less overall.

Let's hope I can get that far! My thread where I'm taking these from only has up to episode 18! D8

I THOUGHT THAT WAS HIM. For some reason I decided he wasn't because he looked too young and the voice sounded off to me for some reason. Damn, thanks for pointing that out! A friend of mine also pointed out that he's in a few of the 90s Godzilla films as well.

And speaking of cross-Toku actors, I just found out today that Mitsuko Hoshii (who played Minami in ACE) is also in episode 8 of IRON KING! The same episode directed by the guy who directed the old Gamera movies, no less! What a crazy, mixed-up world Toku is!

I love Japanese Kids' shows in the 70s. So bubbly and happy and yet so downright brutal at the same time.

You forgot to mention the 1960s and 1980s tokusatsu series too. Evil monsters and aliens killed people most of the time.

Nowadays only Ultraman series and movie have that kind of scenes most of the time.

Glad that I had watched Ultraman Ace last time. Great series and I think the final episode is better than Ultraman Leo.

Yup , they don't make them like they used too :redface2: ..So sad . I'm a huge fan of miniature work, suit design, pyrotechnics etc. all used in the 'good old days'. Not a fan of CGI = (cartoon) basically

CGI is "nothing" compared with miniature work.

While I agree in most cases re: CGI, I can make a few exceptions.

Ultra Galaxy's Litra, though entirely CGI, had a fantastic character, elevating it above being just a simple, kinda mediocre CG model.

CG enhancement for weapons and things are great too. Not talking about the overkill present in the sentai series these days, but for beams and missles, it's dandy. Best example: Velocron is pretty awesome in Ace, he is. But the CG missiles they gave him in Mebius sent him from pretty awesome to HOLY HELL THAT WAS AWESOME in my book. I love showing that scene to people and seeing their eyes pop out of their head at the absurdity of it.

But yeah, practical effects rule otherwise.

That's true but I really think the violence inherent in those acts really peaked in the 70s and spilled over a bit into the 80s. At some point I think even Japanese parents were like, "Whoa, guys."

Freakin' sweet! More stuff for the One-Stop!
