Torrenting and College

A question that I've always had just popped up in a poll, so I thought I might as well post it. I know we've had other threads that addressed this issue indirectly, but I wanted to understand it clearly.

So when you go to college, your torrenting is monitored? By who? Has the law intervened? I'm going to college in about two months, so I'm actually kinda worried about this. Thanks to those who choose to enlighten me. ^_^

I think it may vary from college to college; at mine there was a cap on how much you could upload per day, but nothing on downloading. The actual content didn't seem to be monitored either. My whole 4 years I basically just used BitTorrent and sometimes WinMX, and there were never any problems. Some people I know got briefly kicked off if they uploaded too much per day, but they could just go down to whoever runs the school network and get back online with a warning.

Again, it might depend on your school though, and whatever their policy is about this. It's usually fairly easy to find out from someone there.

my school police is that they monitor everything we ul/dl .... they keep logs on everything we do in case some company decides to sue me

some of my friends had caps on their d/ls though... so u just have to find out what your school's limits are and play it by ear i guess >_<

talk to some of your upperclassmen... they usually know what's going on :3

A few people, including a friend of mine got caught torrenting a ton of stuff so they were told to delete it all. I think that if you download a shitload, you will get caught. Maybe do it in moderation. there is always DD, which I dont believe is monitored, otherwise I would be screwed.

Wow, they are someone who is actually monitoring what you are downloading ? :O_O:

But, yeah, since you are not torrenting in the comfort of your own home, then well, its another story altogether

The way I use bittorrent breaks down like this:
1% hard-to-find anime
99% tokusatsu

All I really download is toku, but it's gonna be annoying as all hell having to rely on nothing but ddl when I move onto campus. It'll be even more annoying when a particular show is available via BT only with no ddl links. :redface2:

Buuuuuuuut, MegaUpload's Happy Hour Premium will definitely be a godsend when I get there!

If it's just tokusatsu stuff, i.e. unlicensed, the only real reason they can be telling you off is bandwidth usage, so just try not to go overboard with that.

At mine you can't access torrents, games or even IRC without hacking/ tunneling software. I never bothered torrenting, but I did find that I got insanely good DCC and DDL speeds with it, so I made the most of that without going overboard. Some places are stricter than others, but really, just be sensible. There are bound to be many other students doing the same as you and worse, and in a lot of universities the techs who manage the college network might even be people you could discuss it with to get around the monitoring, some of them are students too. Because most places are different, it's best to talk to someone where you are.
And using your own personal computer means they can't monitor you as much and you're not really leaving them liable, like you would be if you were for some crazy reason torrenting on a library computer o_O
