2008 was a meh year for me. It gave us Kiva, which, despite its megaton of flaws, I actually really enjoyed, especially towards the second half, I just hated wasting nearly the entire first half on...well, nothing really, it seemed like nothing happened and the show bored the heck out of me until the Checkmate Four. Go-Onger was...well, I don't want to get into a Go-Onger bash fest, but I really enjoyed the first 14 or so episodes of Go-Onger, so it's the biggest disappointment in tokusatsu that I've seen in a long time.
Rescue Force was a fun show, but I had trouble sticking to it, I could let episodes stack up and feel no real impulse to watch them, though I loved it once I watched them, actually getting them playing was the hard part. Then there's Keitai Sousakan 7 which, aside from a random spell when I really stopped watching everything, I've loved, though it's not without its flaws, a lot of the episodes felt incredibly random, there just for the sake of adding to the episode count.
Annnnd finally Ultra Galaxy NEO, which has definitely been my favorite 2008 tokusatsu. It's short, sweet, filled with monster action, and did something to improve upon the first series by given the story more substance. I only hope we get a third series eventually (hopefully a full length one), because this has the potential to be an epic show given the right amount of time, NEO certainly made its mark on me.
Tokusatsu for 2009 is looking good, I'm loving Decade more than I've loved any series in ages, though I've got my reservations about the first Blade world episode and the way Tsukasa acts...I'll just chock that up to Shouji Younemura writing those episodes. Shinkenger is pretty good as well, definitely seems different compared to recent series, it's nothing too great yet, but I've got infinite hope.
Annnnd I'll keep hoping Rescue Fire turns out to be a good show as well.
