I'm not talking about villainous teams like the hanarangers (Kakuranger), the nejiranger (Megaranger), or the shadow rangers (Jetman and Gaoranger), but individual evil warriors
BEWARE FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T WATCHED ZYURANGER, TIMERANGER, HURRICANGER, ABARANGER AND GEKIRANGER: SPOILERS BELOW
In every series with one or two evil warriors, they completely steal the show and are often the best part of it
series with evil rangers which become good after a few episodes:
-Zyuranger: Burai, who is evil at the beginning but becomes good after about seven episodes: he is the most memorable character of the show (except for Bandora thanks to Machiko Soga), and by far the most memorable warrior (even when he was good, his short lifespan storyline gave him an emotional plot)
if I had to give an alternative title to Zyuranger , I would call it: "the tragedy of Burai and the crazy antics of the Bandora gang"
- Hurricaneger: I don't like a lot this series, because I don't like the Jakanja (I need to be interested in the villains to appreciate a sentai) However,in my opinion the most interesting plot were the gouraiger plot when they were with the Jakanja, and were villains; once they change sides and become heroes, except for a few episodes, they are less interesting (which can be explained easily, since it's Shurikenger's turn to steal the show) And I feel the Hurricaneger are overshadowed first by the gouraigers, next by Shurikenger.
(about a series with rival schools, I think Gekiranger is much better)
Series when the evil ranger(s) (or ranger-like warrior(s)) is evil almost until the end
-Abaranger: when you ask what is great in abaranger to someone who enjoyed that show their first answer is one word: ABAREKILLER
Not only abarekiller is very cool, badass and has a interesting storyline, but abaranger storyline is either about him or about Asuka and his family (and Asuka himself has a storyline when he is possessed by an evil armor): I feel that abared seems to be a supporting character (and the writers tried to make the veiwers forget that by making him abaremax). Alternative title of abaranger "the ordeal of Asuka and his family and the madness of Dr Mikoto Nakadai"
Gekiranger: Am I the only one after watching that show to think that the REAL protagonist of this series is Rio?
The gekiranger's storyline and Rio and Mele's storyline are very similar (they are taught by mentors in order to be stronger and better fighters).However I find Rio's evil school much more fascinating that the heroes's good school.Moreover, the real antagonist of the show is revealed to be Long.
Lastly, Rio and Mele general storyline is fascinating and often very touching.
It seems that in this show, instead of
Heroes: Gekiranger and the good school
Villains: evil school
You have
- Real protagonists and antiheroes: Rio and his faithful companion Mele
- Bunch-of-goodies-two-shoes-who-are-the-supposed-heroes-because-you-understand-it's-a-kid-show-and-kids-need-good-roles-models: the gekirangers and their funny animal friends
- Completely evil antagonist: Long
Lastly, even if he isn't evil but mostly an anti-hero, I think Naoto/Timefire is the most interesting ranger in Timeranger, because, even if he wants to protect the city, he has a lust for power and doesn't hesitate to use the fact that Timered's father is injured to try to have more power; and lust for power is characteristic of a bad guy, even if in fact he's a good guy and has a heart underneath.
