The TMNT / Naruto Experiment Seems To Have Paid Off

Remember that Ninja Turtles / Naruto crossover IDW said they were doing? The first issue gained a lot of attention even before its release for just being what it is, but the media spotlight doesn’t always equal high sales. except in this case. Issue #1 released last November, and did well enough that they’re releasing it again. When TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES x NARUTO #1 hits shelves again next Match, the inner content will be the same, but the cover will be different – a new illustration by Jorge Corona. Here’s what that looks like: Caleb Goellner (IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog) wrote this story and and Hendry Prasetya (IDW’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) created the art. The premise is that the Turtles simply exist in ancient Japan, and so does April O’Neil. She has a meeting with Lady Tsunade, which attracts the curiosity of Naruto and his friends — and also the Foot Clan. Soon it’s an all-out brawl between the heroes and enemies of both worlds (or in this continuity, the same world). “It doesn’t just take a village to hit a milestone like this, in the case of issue #1 going back for a second printing, it took two,” joked […]

I'm intrigued by the new cover art by Jorge Corona. The TMNT and Naruto styles are distinct, and I'm curious to see how Corona has blended them together. The story itself is less interesting to me, but fantastic art can elevate even a mediocre plot. I might check this out just for the visuals.

This is so strange... I never would have asked for a TMNT and Naruto crossover. It honestly sounded kind of ridiculous when I first heard about it. But seeing the response, the fact that it's getting a second printing, and reading what the creators are saying... it's making me reconsider. I think I might have underestimated this. Maybe the combination of these two ninja-centric worlds is actually a brilliant idea. I didn't know I needed this until right now. I'm definitely going to check it out.

Finally! Some Naruto content with no 100 filler episodes! Maybe now I can finally understand the plot without having to skip half the story. Although, knowing crossovers, they'll probably find a way to stretch this out into a 12-issue maxi-series with plenty of unnecessary subplots. But hey, at least the turtles look cool, right? Cowabunga, dattebayo!

I mean, the possibilities are endless! I'm just picturing the scene: The Foot Clan is attacking, things are getting tense, and suddenly, Naruto decides it's time to bust out the Sexy Jutsu. He transforms, expecting to completely throw off the Foot Soldiers, but then the turtles just stare at him with these blank expressions. Leonardo, ever the disciplined one, just sighs and says, 'Naruto, we're fighting ninjas. This is not the time.' Raphael grumbles, 'I've seen weirder stuff down in the sewers. Like, way weirder.' Michelangelo, being Michelangelo, is probably the only one slightly amused, but mostly just confused, like, 'Dude, are you okay?' And Donatello would probably try to analyze the transformation scientifically, completely missing the point. It would be an absolute comedic goldmine!

I can just imagine the turtles' reactions to the Sexy Jutsu. It's even funnier when you consider that they're, well, technically always naked. So Naruto's transformation probably wouldn't phase them at all. It would be like, 'Dude, we're turtles. We don't wear clothes. This is just Tuesday.' Maybe Donatello would try to explain the biological differences between human and turtle anatomy, completely missing the comedic intent of the jutsu. Or maybe Raphael would just say, 'If you're trying to distract us, try offering us pizza. That's way more effective.

Dude, the writing is straight-up terrible. This whole thing is like a massive 'if you know, you know' situation, just throwing in little hints and nods to Naruto without actually telling the story. It's like they're scared to go all in on the crossover, man. And the vibe is totally off. This ain't OG Naruto with all the energy; it feels more like Shippuden, but without any of the good stuff. We're seeing Kakashi just spamming his Sharingan like it's nothing, bro. Where's the strain? Where's the chakra drain? It's like they just grabbed a bunch of stuff without even knowing what it means. Even the whole Kurama talking to Naruto thing, which was huge in the beginning, is just gone. But the biggest letdown? The turtles, dude. I was hyped to see the Naruto crew freak out over four humanoid turtles. That's, like, the whole point of a crossover! But they just brush it off. Everyone's just cool with it. They totally missed the chance for a seriously epic reaction. I'm not sure I'm even gonna bother with the next one

Honestly, I'm just glad this crossover is leaning more towards the Shippuden era than Boruto. I mean, can you imagine if it was Boruto? We'd have cyborgs, alien tech, and who knows what else thrown into the mix with the turtles. It would be a complete mess. At least with the Shippuden setting, there's still some semblance of ninja tradition and classic jutsu. Plus, the characters are just way more developed and interesting in Shippuden. We get to see them at their peak, dealing with serious conflicts and emotional struggles. I'd much rather see that interact with the TMNT universe than deal with the whole Boruto power creep and convoluted plotlines. So yeah, even if the writing isn't perfect, I'm still relieved they went with Shippuden. It could have been way worse.

Okay, so the concept is kinda cool, I guess. But TMNT has always been about sci-fi stuff mixed with more traditional ninja vibes, with a sprinkle of spiritual stuff depending on the version. I'm just not sure how that's gonna gel with Naruto's, like, hand-sign magic. It's a totally different style. I see why they went with younger Naruto, though. Back then, they at least tried to be actual ninjas, you know? It wasn't all giant summons and crazy powers. So, picking that part of the timeline makes sense if they're trying to connect the two. It's still a stretch, though. I'm curious, but I'm not holding my breath
