I don't think they have a beef with him. They just thought five other directors were better.
Having only five Best Director nominations with ten Best Picture nominations is such a problem, though. It's like there are five "real" nominations and five "pander to the viewing audience so our ratings stop sucking" nominations. :redface2:
Keep in mind that a lot of who gets nominated and who doesn't also comes down in big part to studio politics and momentum and who is willing to "campaign."
The Oscars can make for a good "recommended movies" list and it's a good way to give the spotlight to movies that would otherwise get overlooked. But it's such a political game, it's not worth getting worked up about who wins and loses.

The reason Oscar now go with 10 BP noms instead of the traditional 5 is because of the snub they did to TDK and Wall-E a few years ago. That created a backlash and the Oscars handlers thought that by expanding the noms to 10, they won't leave any fan-favorites out. It is probably also a scheme to help the rating since they believe many fans of the BP noms will tune in to see if their favorite film will win the big one, although I think it will probably be awarded to either The Social Network or The King's Speech. Unfortunately, Inception has a long shot to win this one.

Pretty much. Ratings do have a lot to do with it-- there's a proven correlation between the ratings of the awards show and the box office gross of the movies nominated for Best Picture.
The highest-rated award show in recent memory was the one where Return of the King took Best Picture. Prior to that, the highest-rated ceremony of the last 30 years was the one where Titanic won. When the five nominees are all small indie pictures grossing under $100 million BO, ratings notably lag.
Last year's experiment with the 10-Pictures idea yielded the ceremony's highest ratings in five years, so it seems to be working for them.
As I said, personally, I like to use the awards more as a way to find out about smaller movies that don't get a lot of publicity, so when it comes to Best Picture, I don't especially care about seeing the movie I like best win. Inception made a billion dollars and Nolan is one of the most powerful directors in Hollywood. Neither needs an award to legitimize their accomplishments.
