The New Rob Zombie film is...

laudre, you should check out Carpenter's CIGARETTE BURNS, his entry into the Masters of Horror Showtime series. It's pretty good.

I'll do that. Thanks. I've been wanting a good, new John Carpenter movie for almost two decades now.

As for Prince of Darkness, I will say that it's one of his best. I expected it to be crappy, as i had heard bad things about it, then i watched it and BAM!!! Sucker punch to the nuts. Great fucking flick. In Fact, that was the first movie where i almost pissed myself from a jump scare. It's the last scare of the film. Laudre knows what I'm talking about. Holy **** that one got me the first time i saw it.

Oh hell yeah. It was kinda funny -- PoD was one of the pre-suckage Carpenter movies I hadn't seen, and the only things I'd heard about it was that it was supposedly the scariest movie anyone I'd even heard of had ever seen, and that it was somewhat Lovecraftian. Now, I'm a big fan of Lovecraft, so the combination of the two things -- Lovecraft and pre-suckage Carpenter -- made me rent it. I watched the movie in the middle of the afternoon, in a well-lit living room, on crappy VHS (the store I got it from didn't have it on DVD, and I don't know if it was even out on DVD at the time; I hope it is by now, but I haven't looked for it yet), and as no movie at the time had yet managed to actually frighten me -- startle me, spook me, sure, but not honest to gods fear -- I was skeptical about the scary part.

I spent the next three nights sleeping with my closet light on, and with two doors closed between me and the nearest mirror. (You'll have to see the movie to get that.) It wasn't the kind of cheap thrills you get when something unexpected jumps out of you; it's the kind of scary that makes me love Lovecraft, the kind that squats in your brain and puts dark and, indeed, squamous things in the corners of your vision. It's the only American movie I've seen that's ever done that to me; it wasn't until I saw the Japanese version of Ring that I experienced it again. (And Ring isn't nearly as scary as PoD.)

What did you think of In The Mouth of Madness? I appreciated that one alot too. I understand what you mean about the mirrors too. When Carpenter was in his prime, no one could touch him. And, I have seen PoD at Best Buy on DVD. It's a bare-bones release, but it's only like 9.99. I too greatly love H.P. Lovecraft. In fact, one of the other entries in the Masters of Horror series is a fairly good adaptation of a Lovecraft story. It's called DREAMS IN THE WITCH HOUSE. I liked it.

Sounds like you got some good taste in horror flicks man. Hit me up on AIM or Yahoo sometime.

I haven't seen it, actually. Truth is, I'm only likely to see it if I stumble across it on cable and have nothing else to do (extremely unlikely now, given that when I'm bored now I can just turn to one of a dozen writing projects I'm doing). What happened is this: when it came out, I was a broke college student, and going to the movies was something that happened rarely and usually on someone else's dime. Nothing about the movie looked remotely appealing, even with John Carpenter's name on it, so I didn't bother. By the time I got to where I could watch it if I wanted to, I'd already seen Vampires and Escape from LA, which combined to show that John Carpenter had lost his touch, and in digging around I found out that the writer was responsible for some really, really crappy movies (such as Judge Dredd and Freddy's Dead), so... essentially, I've got so many other movies I'd like to see that are manifestly less of a risk of two hours or so of my time, that I'm just not likely to bother.

That is the truth. He was a great writer and director, before ... I wish I knew what happened. He did movies in the 70s and 80s that were made of GOD and WIN, and every movie of his I've seen made after They Live has been made of ASS and POO. He fucked up Vampires, for ****'s sake. (I haven't read the book, but a friend of mine who has and loves the book has told me, in extensive detail, just how much he butchered the book in translation to film.)

Awesome. I hope it's at least widescreen.

Oh, that's cool. If it's a good translation of the story, there's a lot of creepy-as-**** visuals they can use for it.

Truth is, I don't watch many horror movies, mostly because the crap ratio is even higher than 70s sci-fi movies. But I like to think I have decent taste in movies for the most part, though I do have an entirely unreasonable affection for House of the Dead :D. Something about a movie in which you have dialogue like:

"You made yourself immortal!"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To live forever!"

But, anyway, I'm usually logged in on AIM, same name as my handle here.
