The Good But Old Transformers

Matrix

Matrix of Leadership
Okay so ever since I saw Transformers 2, which I thought was awesome btw, I have wanted to get into the old Transformers and stuff. But there are a bunch of shows I don't know which to start with and stuff. Like I saw all of Beast Wars and the Sequel to it, which I can't remember so if you could tell me I would love you. Anyways, where should I start, cause its just awesome!!!!!!!!!

After I saw RotF (Which I thought was pretty good, but about an hour too long) I wanted to get into some of the stories about the Autobots and Decepticons since I grew up with Beast Wars and Beast Machines. I watched the first episode of the G1 cartoon and thought it was total crap, so after that I started reading the comics that IDW started putting out a few years ago and so far they aren't bad.

Sorry that the cartoons of the mid 1980s aren't to you're level..but they are what Transformers are, the rest are craptacular imo {Beast Wars was good though}

start at wherever you want..Robots in Disguise, Transformers Generation 1, Animated..it doesn't matter. but if you do start at G1, know that Japan continued it with Headmasters, Victory, & something else that escapes my mind because I'm about to go to Hawaii...

so good luck with that

Well if you really want to get to the roots, G1 is the way to go, but seeing as you saw Beast Wars, Animated is a good bet, it may be relatively new but does capture the essence of transformers over the years and it was written by a beast wars writer so you'll at least be used to the writing style.

I also grew up with Beast Wars/Machines, caught most episodes of RiD, and watched a few episodes of the Unicron Trilogy(Armada, Energon, Cybertron). At this point, I have all of G1 on DVD. It sucks. I love it, but it's bad. Any actually storytelling doesn't kick in until after the old movie in seasons 3&4. It requires less or as much thinking as RotF, so you should be cool with it.

If you've seen the Beast era then you've seen some of the best storytelling.

I recommend the first season or so of Generation 1 (the original cartoon) & the associated movie.

After the Beast era came Robots in Disguise, an anime show which is for the most part considered mediocre.

Then came the Unicron Trilogy, three consecutive shows (Armada, Energon, Cybertron) which ran a gambit of quality from sub-par to total crap. I'd say avoid this for the most part.

The most recent series, Transformers Animated has had mostly favorable reception but it does use a very unique art style & is essentially aimed at a younger audience. Give that a shot if you want.

Hmm... I'd recommend hitting up the pilot of G1. After that.. maybe look around for "The Best of" lists and watch those.

Oldie G1 ain't the easiest to watch. It was sex back in the day cuz it was just so.... frackin' larger than life! You hadn't seen much like it and couldn't wait to get your hands on the toys.

I don't care who you are tho.... after watching the G1 pilot and... hmm... what was that finale where in the end, the Autobots and Spike shot in to the air and blasted Cybertron back in to space? LOVED that episode!

Ah, "The Ultimate Doom!" Great saga!

But after you get the best of.. break open Transformers the Movie. That film has stood the test of time for me and then some.

Then the G1 season that followed it. I loved all those episodes even more than the original series. Especially "Call of the Primals", WebWorld, Grimlock's New Brain, Burden Hardest to Bear, and The Return of Optimus Prime.

After that are the Japanese series which I found hard as hell to get in to.

Robots in Disguise has what I felt was the best looking Optimus and while Armada started off as one of the worse things I have ever seen in my life, it had a HUGE and awesome finale saga that was worth sitting through.

I liked Super Link, but eventually fell out of that and REALLY enjoyed Galaxy Force, but still need to finish.

Beast Wars is Transformers at its very best, but you need a little G1 perspective to REALLY love it.

Happy hunting and make sure to let us know where you start an what you think!

Oh! And Transformers Animated.... started off kinda crappy, but really finished strong in the end.
