I watched the '86 movie on Sunday, and it really seemed like two different movies alternating between each other. There was this really cool movie where the Decepticons attacked Autobot city, Ultra Magnus took on Galvatron and Unicron almost ripped Cybertron apart. Then there was this really silly movie where Hod Rod and Kup were running from robot fish and break dancing while "Dare to Be Stupid" played in the background.
The IDW comics have been pretty good, though. Everything is more serious (Optimus Prime has already sort of killed a few humans by letting their van slam into him - on purpose) and the character spotlights in particular feel pretty dark (They got me really interested in Shockwave, who may or may not have planted the seeds of life on Earth in IDW-verse). The best part is that there's no toyline to go with it, so characters won't be killed and replaced just for the sake of selling toys in real life.
