Despite the reviews I did get it. (only paid 20 bucks thanks to some giftcards I forgot I had.) and....actually?
I'm...not completely crushed. It doesn't have some deep, engaging plot or complex story, but probably ten minutes or so in and I've got a giant bloody canon and I'm shooting directly at the alien mothership while blowing up drop ships with impunity. Chugging beer, one-liners, all that supposedly juvenile stuff the reviewers are decrying...
yeah....THAT'S what we really signed up for when we backed Duke. If anyone is disappointed, it's noone's fault but their own if they've forgotten that. No amount of blaming Gearbox, 3D Realms, or anyone else will erase the fact that they expect too much of Duke.
yeah, I'll admit the graphics might be subpar, but...I find myself not caring. two-weapon limit? pfft. Don't really give a damn right now. No Mighty Foot? Still don't really care.
my advice to anyone who is disappointed by the reviews:
Hit up Gamefly or your local rental store. RENT IT. If you really don't like it, you won't be out all that much. But by and large I think people have forgotten what Duke was and still is. They expect more from something that was never much more than mindless fun in the first place.
personally, I'm not unhappy spending 20 bucks on this game. (with a 10 buck pre-order on Mass Effect 3 to neutralize my gaming karma.) Try it before you believe the reviews.
