The Art of Practical Stunts in Modern Action Films

I've been rewatching some of my all-time favorite action flicks and can't help but appreciate how vital practical stunts are to creating that raw, intense energy on screen. Films like "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "John Wick" really champion this craft, as they blend breathtaking choreography with real physicality. The stunts are just so visceral, especially when you see the actors throw themselves into the work, often without digital trickery.

Take the knife fight in "John Wick: Chapter 2," for example. The way Keanu Reeves and the choreography team orchestrated that entire sequence, what a masterpiece! They managed to show both the elegance and brutality of combat, making every punch and kick feel impactful. On the flip side, I think some recent blockbusters have relied too heavily on CGI, which can sometimes make action scenes feel less exciting.

I'm curious what you all think: Are there any modern films that do a great job of utilizing practical stunts? Or do you prefer the more stylized approach seen in some of today's superhero films? Let’s geek out over our favorite stunts and the artistry behind them!

Totally agree with you about the power of practical stunts! The energy they bring is hard to replicate with CGI. The knife fight in "John Wick: Chapter 2" really showcases how choreography can elevate the tension and storytelling, it's the kind of scene that stays with you long after the credits roll.

I'm really looking forward to "Deadpool 3" coming out next week. I’ve heard they’re doubling down on practical effects for the action sequences, which could be a refreshing take in the superhero genre. It’ll be interesting to see how they blend that with the humor and style we expect from the franchise. What’s a practical stunt scene from a superhero film that stands out to you?
