Why? Giving Arata the role of leader is a unique change of pace, having someone more unique like him does a lot to make the series more interesting.

This.

Did u guys not.. watch the series? In Epic 24, I think only someoone of Alata's personality could actually do something like ASK the headder what's wrong... I love Hyde/Kento to bits but it's obvious it's out of his character nature to do something that Alata could.

Alata is imo, the perfect leader, for any sort of organization, because he inspires, not just leads.

Having Hyde as the leader would have really gone against the lighter tone of the series. For what the series is Alata is the best choice for leader. Hyde is too serious and rational of character for a series that more or less centers around faith and belief to work as the leader. That said they missed a major opportunity by not having having Hyde act as a foil or counter-point for Alata and his optimism.

Jesus, why is this discussion everywhere i go. Even the narrator in that Epic on the movie tv special openly said that Hyde is the team leader. You don't need to wear Red to be the leader in sentai.
Alata is the main character, of course...that is always Red's role.

That's why we need more episodes like 16. But looks like this series entered the plain comedy route for good.

They may name him as the team leader but he hardly shows signs of it, and useless the writers put effort into making a non-red as the canon leader just by the set-up red will fill that position.

Also not really, while it has had 2 recent episodes that showed the comedic side (really the way they have gone from the start) most of the remaining series will no doubt be played straight and serious like the rest of the series.

How does he "hardly show signs" of it? He gives orders to the others and makes plans even when he isn't the focus of the episode, like in the episode Alata was stuck in his suit and the newer one about Eri baking a cake. He's nothing like Ran from Gekiranger. Now that was someone who was leader only in name (even though she was actually called "captain" in the series itself).

Hyde doesn't get center position in the standard team pose and isn't the team representative in reaction shots and mecha calls, but that's because he isn't the main character, Alata is. Those things aren't really connected to leadership.

yeah... I agree. It's like K-Pop bands, the leader isn't always the one who stands centerstage singing and what not... there's always a leader, and a lead/main vocalist. granted the leader can be the lead vocalist, but it's not always the case.

same with sentai

I thought Hyde was appointed the team leader by Master Head? but despite that, Arata still serves as the main character who leads the team.

Hyde isn't the leader, he is the strategist. Alata is the one who directs the combat, not only deciding when to attack but also the pace. And for a team that only shows any kind of hierarchy when in battle the one who directs the actual combat ranks higher. Frankly they may point and say whatever they want, but the writing does not reflect it.

When actual commands are given to the team, like when they spread themselves when the Yuumaju attacked for the first time, Hyde was the one giving orders.

One of the few times I remember Alata actually giving orders to the team during combat (he told the team to run away while facing the Nessie monster), he was completely ignored. Unless you think that everyone would just stand still if Alata didn't get his obligatory "red speaks first" moments, I don't see how he controls the overall flow of battle.
