**** SUPERMAN.

It doesn't really sound like it's dead just that it's in limbo. I think they just took things out of proportion.

Okay first of all the title of the thread is kind of misleading because it makes it sound like you're gonna be some Punisher fan going off about how Superman sucks because he doesn't kill or some bullshit like that.

As for this report. I'm probably not as shocked as I should be. WB have become experts at dropping the ball when it comes to Superman. Though if it is true that they aren't going ahead with a feature film it might lend some credence to some rumors that for better or worse they are looking to the characters future on television.

DC is just the worst when it comes to getting their properties to the big screen. They either don't get them to the big green, are far far too slow or do a very poor job.

Your choices were: No film gets made, or film gets made very quickly (and that generally turns out bad).

Also, the rights to different parts of Superman will be split. It'll be a worthless character, if DC and the Siegels don't work together.

More background:

This means the Siegels — repped by Marc Toberoff of Toberoff & Associates — now control depictions of Superman’s origins from the planet Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lora, Superman as the infant Kal-El, the launching of the infant Superman into space by his parents as Krypton explodes and his landing on Earth in a fiery crash.

What this means is that if Warner Bros. has any intention of Superman remaining their sole property, they will need to cough up some serious coin to do so. Come 2013, the families of Siegel and Shuster will own everything from Action Comics #1 (Superman’ first appearance), as well as his costume, origin and alter ego. Warner Bros. and DC Comics will retain some aspects, established after Superman became an official DC Comics character. These aspects, and characters, include his ability to fly, x-ray vision, heat vision, kryptonite, Lex Luthor, Jimmy Olsen and Perry White.

Neither version alone is worth anything.

Since DC is the one holding the super powers portion of Superman DC should just make a new superhero.

You could make an argument for the Siegels coming out slightly ahead, since they could presumably license what they DID own out to other publishers interested in doing radical new takes on Superman.

What is clearly going on in the case, though, is that the judge wants to divide the rights up so much that Warner Bros. and the Siegels have to submit to arbitration. Warner pays some amount to the Siegels to get sole rights to the IP back and everyone goes on their merry way.

Sort of like King Solomon and the baby, only this is a magic baby you can cut into pieces and then reattach later.

Bingo. He split it up in a way that they pretty much have to go to the table. Warner knows this. Hence why they're not rushing.
