Super Sentai Grunts: Were they ever useful?

I love the grunts. many of them look awesome and I agree they are essentially cannon fodder, but they are cool looking cannon fodder.

I think it was only in Megaranger and Gekiranger that the grunt soldier featured were ever shown to be a more major threat aside from being cannon fodder. for Gekiranger, some grunts actually managed to surpass others to become major league monsters to give the Rangers a hard time. that's what I loved about Gekiranger.

zect trooper were usually also paired with grunts in the being of unmolted worms... and those riotrooper IN THE SERIES did actually a good beating on the good guys...

i think those grunts are just part of the tradition... i guess something to look forward to in the next series

Grunts are usually just a diversion in my opinion, but in Gokaiger, with the grunts growing to kaijuu size with the monster of the week, they're posing a bigger threat.

The grunt armies in the older shows seemed to have a little more to do to occupy themselves than much of the newer ones. When they're not kneeling in submission to the generals, we would see them operate machinery in the evil lair, drive motor vehicles, even get in an occasional line of dialogue... right before they were mustered out to get their asses kicked for the umpteenth time...

One thing I'll say for super sentai grunts: when they get firearms they tend to shoot much better than either Stormtroopers or Red-Shirted Ensigns!

Call them what you will: grunts, footmen, underlings, push-overs..... useless?

Seems like its an ongoing trend that shows no signs of changing. The big bad monster comes in and let the grunts do the work (not to mention never once making use of the distraction they provide), only to be beaten down again and again by our heroes.

So why do we have them? Are they just there to fill the time or have they ever been useful somehow?

Huh... There's no Japanese merchandising for the grunts. Only Power Rangers makes merchandising for them as far as I know.

the topic gives me a reason to point out the difference in terms of epicness between the all-ranger scene at the early part of gokaiger vs the all-rider scene in decade's 1st episode...

we all know grunts will not win that war but fighting someone with almost the same powers as you is very interesting...
