Stupid Computer...

Your recent post, PCI/AGP devices can share IRQs for a number of years now. It really seems like your HD is going kaput with corruption and bad sectors. The reason it'll reboot is Windows would constantly try to read the corrupted files and can't so to save itself it reboots. You should've left the scandisk go to 100%, even if certain percents takes forever.

How do I try and start WinXP using "Command Prompt?"

Pick boot in safe mode command prompt only, if it isn't in the list of options, I think it's F8 to get the full boot options, it will say what key to get more options.

Following up on Kyu and Barom : if you can run scandisk or chkdsk /f in your case, let it run all the way even if it can take forever. If it goes over night though, chances are your HD is too corrupt to read or you have some other prob. I'd try the recovery procedure if you can. It is F8 to get full boot options.

O_o Wow, Mara knows her DOS commands and their switches well.

Another option, assuming the first system is a desktop and you have access to a 2nd desktop, would be to take the drive out of the system failing to boot, install it in the 2nd system and run scandisk and an updated virus scan on the drive from the working system.

Okay.... doesn't seem to be giving me a chance to hit F8 anywhere...

If you're getting a Disk Read Error then it won't.

Do you have another drive in your computer?

I had the Disk Read Error problem myself for awhile and, iirc, I fixed it by installing XP on the other drive and allowing it to run Scandisk. It found a *ton* of errors and a bunch of stuff (including the few Justiriser eps I had and all the games that were installed on a particular partition) were corrupted but I got the thing back in working order.

Depending on how you have your BIOS configured, you'll see that screen with the Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition or Professional) with that blueish bar running under it. Right before you see that screen, you'll see a blacked out screen. If you configure it, that's the screen that will run the specs of your computer (ie. CPU Speed, RAM, your drives). It's doing all that anyways, but I've set mine to actually show that information.

By default BIOS is usually configured to not have any pause to show the commands for entering BIOS (which is depending on your system - Del key, space, or Esc), but it's at that time you can push F8 and it should take you to the Full Boot Option screen. Later, you can change the option in BIOS (to for example, 5 secs) so that it gives you time to enter BIOS or change boot order, etc.

Barom thanks. --> is a computer nerd as much to run and understand my shiet. I've busted it a lot and have had to fix it too.
