Stupid Frakkin Computer Has Stopped Working!

So my other computer stopped working today, and I was trying to reinstall windows with a Compaq Quick Restore CD, I get to the part about it installing start menu items, and it freezes, so I have to turn the computer off. Now I can't even get the quick restore cd to run properly! Is there anyway I can reformat the computer without a cd and start over from the beginning?

If you can borrow another XP disk off a friend or something, you can try installing with that while using the serial number that came with your computer.

Does that disk of yours have a "restore to factory defaults" option or something that sounds like that? That should clear the hard drive and set up everything again from a blank slate. If you're just trying to "repair" it, sometimes it might not install correctly.

You need a working Windows cd to get things back up and running. There are no other alternatives unless you want to try Linux and get lost in a sea of dependencies (Yeah... prolly best not to go that route ). There's plenty of ways you can format the hard drive without a windows disk, but then you're stuck with an empty hard drive and no operating system. If you're having problems reading the disk after it failed... then maybe it's dirty or scratched or something? Or maybe the drive optics are dirty? It could be anything.

Just don't be an idiot and throw the computer away like some would do...
