I went to Akihabara the other day to line up for the first of few test locations in Japan for an early test version of Street Fighter IV. The SF4 machines were on the 3rd floor of the game center and I was at the back of the line...
...on the 1st floor.
But along the stairways were a bunch of monitors showing all the action. It gave me some time to kill until my turn was up.
When I sat down at the machine any played it. There were only a few selectable characters on this version of the game. This current version's roster consisted of:
- Ryu
- Ken
- Guile
- Chun Li
- Blanka
- Sagat
- M. Bison (better known as Balrog in the US version)
- Dhalsim
- Zangief
- Abel (A new character who seems to be a Shotokan guy from France)
It felt kinda like Street Fighter III but more faster. The controls felt tight and it was easy to execute your moves. Surprisingly, I was able to beat 5 guys in a row before I got obliterated by a Blanka player.
The graphics were REALLY impressive. It's basically kinda like Appleseed and Vexille meets Street Fighter. Y'know, that kinda cel-shaded look but with TONS of detail. Whenever you do your super move or a counter-attack, you get treated to some really crazy camera shots and animations. To see what I'm talking about, click here.
After I finished, some survey guy in a Capcom shirt came up to me:
"So could you tell me what you think?" he asked.
"Well, the grahpics are really good cause they're not trying to be like the other games at the same time of being pretty detailed and the gameplay is pretty loyal to Street Fighter."
"Anything else?"
"Yeah...where the **** is Fei-Long?"
"Oh...heh...ummm...well...it's still an ealy version."
"Yeah yeah..."
And then I walked away.
As a fan of Street Fighter, I'm pretty happy so far with what I've played though.
