It was made by Leiji Matsumoto of Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 fame, supposedly it's movie outperformed "Star Wars (A New Hope)" in the Japanese box office, and is where the "Wave Motion Gun" came from. It's a classic anime series.

I really care less on the stars but as long as it's an anime live action adaptation, I'll try my best to watch this.

I've realised something though. Why do captians typically look the same?

Captain Juzo Okita from Space Battleship Yamato for example, looks similar to Daitetsu Minase from Super Robot Taisen Original Generation.

Especially the beard.
