[ASIAN-ENT] Shaw Bros. vs. Golden Harvest/Independent

So back to this thread's original subject. I've heard that Shaw Bros. were crazy bastards, and were very strict on their actors. I mean they kept them in dorms on their set, when filming, so they pretty much had free reign on them.

Yeah basically. They provided the living quarters and everything but at the same time, when they called...you came. Gordon Liu told stories about his brother LKL of how he would get angry and cut him with one of the real swords...then he just laughed...:sly:

What the hell?! That's a little too much love! Maybe LKL got too into his role. :sparta!:

He's definitely a favorite MA director. To me he's second only to Yuen Woo-Ping, and Sammo Hung/Jackie Chan would be a close third. I'm not a huge fann of Chang Cheh or John Woo so they're not really favorites.

Hahahaha, apparently HK directors are just REALLY harsh.

I understand what you mean. I have to say he is my favorite, then Sammo/Jackie/Donnie THEN Yuen Woo Ping. I base them on the realism of the fights...lol

So I just bought Eight Diagram Pole Fighter, as I mentioned in another thread. And the action in that was so ridiculously intense, it blew me away. I was totally impressed by the pure intensity and power shown. I think it may have had to do with Alexander Fu Sheng dying half way through making it, because there was definitely something that made the team behind this go wild. Intense intense intense action. Much fiercer and more violent than most LKL films. Unbelievable.

Although, I think it also had to do with this film being one of Shaw Bros. last hurrahs. At this point in time, Golden Harvest had Jackie Chan and Sammo who'd both had hits with films like The Young Master and The Prodigal Son. Things were looking bleak for Shaw Bros. film productions as they were transitioning more to television with TVB. Their last great MA film was probably Martial Arts of Shaolin. And even for that film, they were jumping into the shoes of another already established franchise, not one of their own.

By the way, you actually like Donnie Yen over Yuen Woo-Ping?!

Hmmm... Golden Harvest... I remember that one and for some reason, I haven't seen the little promotion before the movie starts. Is it still alive or what?

They started to decline in recent years, and then in 2008 merged. But in 2009 they announced they were relaunching with a slew of new movies for 2010.

But what do you think is better? Shaw Bros.? The classic company that dominated HK cinema with really high budget upscale films from the 1960s to 1980s. Or Golden Harvest? The big company that started to outbeat Shaw through the 80s with Jackie Chan/Samm flicks and has stayed big today.

I'm torn, personally. :disappoin Despite, what my avatar may tell you.

Yeah, I like Donnies, his isn't TOO unrealistic. Also he always makes sure to be fast in the movements like a real fight.

8 Diagram Pole Fighter...was AMAZING!!! The intensity was as you said it from the anger and sadness that LKL and the crew felt because of the passing of Alexander Fu Sheng.
