This is the wrong forum to post something like this on, but I really need to get my thoughts out there and see responses from the actual, rabid fans like myself.
So first things first, I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the San Francisco Browncoats who set up the showing I saw tonight. You guys were awesome, organized, and made the showing a lot of fun with all of your extra activities, even if the only hangman I could win was the damn easy one. ("Browncoats")
So here's the deal. If you haven't seen it yet, and don't want to be spoiled, don't read this. Thank you.
This movie had a lot of excellent points, most of them in the interaction of the secondary (read: Not Mal and River) characters. No character was protrayed wrong or badly in this movie. It's just that two characters got a huge injustice, and that ruined it. More than the entire focus being on River, who had a shockingly simple solution to all of her problems (Go to planet A, you're not schizo anymore. Hooray!). No, Wash and Book got the shaft, and that pissed me off.
If there was contract negotiation failures for the next couple movies, that would explain it. But otherwise, I don't see a reason for either death. It wasn't just that they were pointless and there for shock value, they were badly written. We're supposed to believe that the only member of the cast who would mourn either death is Kaylee? Or that Zoe would go from accepting Wash's death to raving psycho with a death wish back to team leader in 2.5 seconds? Neither character was given the proper sendoff they deserved...but then again, neither character deserved a sendoff. I'm just not sure what Joss was thinking, and to create and build on likeable characters only to kill them for no disernable reason feels like a slap in the face to me as a fan.
I'm...not gonna see this again. I gave my ten bucks to the cause, and if you guys make the $80 mil for the sequel, I applaud you. I just won't be a part of future efforts. I'm a Browncoat, through and through, but for me, the universe has ended at Objects in Space. When someone gives me a worthy follow up, I'll be sure to come back. And I hope someday that does happen. But for now, I'm just dissapointed.
Thanks for listening to me rant.
