SERENITY: Firefly the Movie

Here is my first warning: Miss this movie. Give it a pass, let it walk on by. If you're desperate to see it wait until it comes out inevitably for download in a few days, but don't give Joss your hard earned $7.50.

Here's my second warning: After this paragraph, I'm going to explain why. It'll contain spoilers. Big ones. Read at your own risk.

Again, AVAST MATEYS, THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD!

Let's start with the good. The flying sequences are ruling. The writing is the same as the show, the quips just as funny and nearly every character is done justice in this film. Some, more than others.

First of all, from this point on, this movie shall no longer be referred to as "Serenity." It is, forever more, "River the Vampire Slayer." The entire movie is focused on River without ever giving anything useful away. Yes, you find out River's big mission, and hey, it turns out all she needs to do is go to a planet and boom, schizophrenia is gone. Turns out her craziness is not a result of the tests done on her, but just because of something random she gleaned from a member of the Alliance's parliament. The Vampire Slayer part is because after this, the series is officially about River. Joss made it VERY clear that no one else matters. And believe me, she acts like Buffy the whole movie. Buffy on crack, but Buffy nonetheless.

The other loose ends? The big ones like the hands of blue guys and book's past? No mention. Well, Book does get a few minutes of conversation before he dies. That's right, dies. Book is blown to hell because the Operative wants to get to Mal, in the second most pointless death in the movie. The first belongs to Wash. That's right, Joss kills Wash off in this movie. In case you think I typed it wrong, here it is again: WASH. DIES. In a stupid way, too. He's in mid quip after having saved all their lives when a wooden spike is shoved through his chest. Hmm. It's such a shock value death that none of the cast, for the rest of the movie, even bothers to mourn. They spend half a second less on him than the .5 seconds they spend on Book. Dumb, dumb dumb.

Parts of this movie are gold, but pointless killing of good characters for shock value? That's a slap in the face, Joss. Thank you very much. I think it's just that whenever he gains full creative control Joss decides to mess around, just to prove a point that the world is a sucky place or something like that. Stupid motto. When he's on a place that reigns him in, with a team of other people helping make his ideas good, he produces gold. When he's alone, he does stuff like this.

I've forgiven Joss several times before for boneheaded decisions. This is the last time. Firefly, Angel, and Buffy seasons 1-5 and the first half of Astonishing X-men will always be in my heart as great stuff. But I'm done trusting the man to produce any sort of follow-up that I'll enjoy.

In other words, as far as I'm concerned, this movie doesn't exist. Wash and Book are alive, and everyone is in limbo from where Objects in Space ended until someone gives me something worthy of being a continuation of that series.

I saw the test screenings way back in May. Yay for me and my bitchin' Serenity keychain.

As for "pointless deaths" I really do beg to differ. It's a war. This is how Joss Whedon writes. Nobody is safe, not even the main characters. Does it suck to see someone die? Yes.

In Buffy and Angel he knocked people off like crazy... yeah, some of them came back. Some of them didn't. It's real, though. Do you honestly think that if something like this was REALLY happening that everyone would just get a little beat up but in the end be no worse for wear?

I see a lot of people complaining that they killed off good characters and we never really got to know much about them or their past. Sure, I'd love to find out what made some of these characters so important and what their mysteries were... but we still can find out about them. Have you never lost a good friend?

Can you imagine what it'd be like fighting to reveal the truth about a messed up situation and someone close to you dies because there are people who want to manipulate and control everyone? It'd piss you off, sadden you and make you want to give up... but in a story it's what drives these characters to complete this task. It's what makes it more personal for them. It drives them and gives it purpose.

Anyway, I do kind of agree on the whole "River the Vampire Slayer" thing. Though a big part of me just absolutely loved it... I think Joss Whedon has a thing for having a seemingly helpless character kick everyone's ass... and I think I'll sign up to watch him do it every time.

I apologize for making all of you uber-jealous....

OMG!

It took me some time To figure out wether I loved this Film....Or HATED IT.

I've Decide....I LOVE IT! I was a tad sad when My favorite character, Shepard Book died, but it was a realistic death. But I was Mortified when Wash suddenly bit it. I was appaled in fact that they'd kill him off in such a sudden manner totally devoid of realism. (he was looking out the window at that moment...he didn't see the Reavers aiming guns at him?). But the Movie was SO good, such a worthy successor to the series.

Towards the end when they showed the graves for Mr. Universe and the Others is when I finally started Crying, (so sue me) But the somber feeling of the film was changed to uncontrollable laughter when a group towards the front of the Theatre waited until the credits were completly finished...and then in unison shouted.....

"GRRRRR......ARGGGG"

I LITERALLY could not stop laughing, I think I honestly came close to a heart attack because my left side went numb for a bit. But all in all I give Serenity an 8.5, It loses 1/2 a point for killing Shepard Book, and another point for killing Wash. But we had the ever lovely Kaley with her incredible line in the bar...so that evens it all out.

Okay, I thought the movie was fucking brilliant and fantastic. But the killing of Wash was a BIG mark off my utter and total love and enjoyment from this movie.

So, how was everyone's theatres? At the third Ultrascreen showing it was pretty much filled.

I'd say that'll bring in enough for a sequel or two.

But man.... Wash.... God that brought the movie down for me.... :disappoin

i suffered cardiac arrest, but i loved it ^_^ i just watched the ENTIRE show on thursday and friday before seeing the film, so it was kind of all run right together (like i suppose it should've been). *shakes head, speechless* i just dont know what words to say...it's serenity...can't be bad, but it sure shook me up.
