Saw the first episode...kinda weird but I liked what I saw. I got a kick seeing that they played homage to first episode of Gundam...with the whole Zaku thing.

Yes. The RotK era was a part of Chinese history, ergo, they originally had Chinese names. Guan Yu, Zhou Yu, Liu Bei, Cao Cao, etc.

The Japanese though, when they translated the names, didn't have the right "letters" to write them properly like we can. Japanese use a syllabry, which means each icon (or "letter" in a way) represents one syllable. That gives them just under 200 syllables they can use to express all their words. English has something over 9000, by the by. I think it's like, 9,528 or so, but I can be a bit off.

ANYWAY, Guan Yu became Kanu, the closest the Japanese can get with their writing. Zhou Yu became Shuuyu, Liu Bei into Ryubei, and so on and so forth. Cao Cao's is actually close to his proper pronunciation (It's not "Cow Cow", it's Sao Sao, with a slight 't' infliction before each S).

Just like the Greeks translated some Egyptian names from native Egypt to Greek (Khufu, the Egyptian, became Cheops in Greek). Khufu's the real name, in the original tongue of the person, but the Greeks didn't have the right way to say or write it and made it Cheops.

That's one HUGE advantage the English language has: We keep proper nouns in their root language, as much as possible. No need to change the names to fit the language. Only possible exception is the click-tongue syllables of some tribes, and even then we speak them fine once we hear the word (we're just undecided on how to write them, officially).
