Rewatching KUUGA just killed everything

Joe's nuts for saying that. :redface2:

EDIT: That was the launching pad for his career in the first place.

He's pretty much gone and said that he was forced to do it by his agency and that he doesn't consider tokusatsu to be "real acting" or something like that. He's one of the few heisei actors to be -really- popular and have an okayish career after his show, so I guess it's gone to his head.

Which is why we're never gonna see Kuuga again.

I see this floating around on toku boards all the time whenever Kuuga is brought up but I have yet to see any real evidence of where it came from. No one putting forth this claim has as far as I remember anyway, ever been able to back it up with a link to a written or recorded interview or anything at all really.

Even if it is true, as arrogant, pretentious, and stupid as that might be it does not change the fact that Kuuga is one of the best entries in all of Kamen Rider and that he played the part of Godai Yuuske with the sincerity and conviction the character called for.

i truly wish this was false

He's done an interview in a magazine where he actually says those things. The Japanese wikipedia page for him has a whole article on it.

I guess it wouldn't be impossible for Kuuga to appear again, though... just in-suit. But then, it sucks that we wouldn't get to see his awesome "running straight in while tranforming" henshin.

Sometimes I feel that Japan respects their actors and voice actors a little too much. >_>

Another strange little tid bit, Kuuga's stuntman hasn't really done anything in tokusatsu since Kuuga.

Personally I think Kuuga should just be left alone, it had 48 episodes to tell its story and a 49th (what I consider to be) epilouge. More so than any other series, I feel that Kuuga was really complete.

That's not really the problem -- the problem is that Odagiri's neither a real actor nor a cool person.

That's because Kenji Tominaga's more of a regular actor, focusing on face roles in plays and movies.

All right folks. I asked a very good friend of mine who does translation work for a living to take a look at the Japanese wikipedia article and here is what she had to say on this matter of Joe hating Kuuga and all of tokusatsu. She says she summarized and while it is possible some details are wrong she has complete confidence in the overall view of this assertion: :

"Okay so basically after the show originally finished airing he made some comments to the effect of that he hated henshin heroes, was ordered to play Kuuga by his company, and wanted to quit after being offered the audition.
This naturally caused a huge outrage among Kuuga fans, even though in the same interview he said that he respected the Kuuga staff, and that one of the producers (Takatera Shigenori) said that their friendship was still ongoing.

In comments he made for the release of 2001 he said it was an irreplaceable experience that he treasured and looked back on fondly. When Kuuga placed #1 on a television station's poll of Top 100 Superheroes, in September of 2002, Odagiri broadcast a message thanking the public for not forgetting his performance as Kuuga.

Then in 2005 he conducted another interview with the magazine "Picked Up" (?) where he answered questions about the original interview he'd done and he clarified his position.

Basically, before he auditioned for Kuuga, he hated henshin hero shows, and had expressed his disdain for them and refused to audition when the company had offered him one in the past *before Kuuga*.

So at first when they asked him to audition for Kuuga he was really angry about it. But when he heard that one of the producers was going to be working on it (unnamed, but assumed to be Taketera), he agreed to audition, and got really interested when he talked to the producer about what kind of show he was going to make.

When he agreed to play the role, he wasn't sure how good of a job he was going to do, but felt like in the end he really made a connection to the character.

That's pretty much it. So in summary: hates henshin heroes, didn't want to audition at first, but likes Kuuga, liked playing Kuuga, looked back on the experience fondly. (Or at least, that's what this article says about it)."
