Resident Evil: Survivor Unit Is a Mobile Game Set in an Alternate Timeline Capcom has announced Resident Evil: Survivor Unit, an upcoming mobile survival game launching on Android and iOS by the end of 2025. Developed in collaboration with Aniplex and JoyCity, the game is now open for pre-registration on both major app stores. Unlike the main Resident Evil games, Resident Evil: Survivor Unit takes place in an alternate timeline. Like Resident Evil: Resistance and The Ghost Survivors DLC, it explores “what-if” scenarios that allow for impossible team-ups and returns from the dead—because in this universe, canon is more of a suggestion. Classic Style with a Mobile Twist Resident Evil: Survivor Unit revives some beloved features from the early days of the franchise: Fixed camera angles, like the ones that made everyone bump into walls in 1996 Puzzle-solving mechanics, because zombie survival is meaningless without a good statue puzzle No voice acting, giving players a quiet apocalypse (and maybe fewer cheesy one-liners) A squad-based system where you control a team of 3 or more characters Tower defense-style combat that plays like Plants vs. Zombies if the plants had assault rifles And while Capcom and Aniplex handle the franchise side, JoyCity […]

This really reminds me of State of Survival and that Walking Dead: Survivors mobile game. Both of those also had squad mechanics, resource management, and that base-defense kind of setup. The way you have to place survivors in lanes to fight off waves of zombies is very similar. Even the mix of original characters with famous ones from the main franchise is something those games did too. I’m not saying that’s bad—those games are fun if you like planning and upgrading. But I hope Resident Evil: Survivor Unit does more than just follow that formula. The fixed camera and puzzle elements could make it feel different enough. I just hope they don’t copy the monetization too. In State of Survival, if you don’t pay, you fall behind fast. I don’t want Resident Evil to turn into another wallet competition. Still, I’ll give it a shot. At least this one looks cooler and has characters I already know.

Yes, I believe this game has a lot in common with State of Survival and the Walking Dead Survivors, but with Resident Evil characters. In all three titles, you form a squad to defend against waves of foes. You position your survivors on lanes and watch as they combat zombies, just like in State of Survival. The sense of acquiring resources and strengthening your units remains the same. In the Walking Dead survivors, you have fixed character roles and had to manage a small group through each encounter. Resident Evil: Survivor Unit introduces an own puzzle and camera style, but the core gameplay—collect survivors, set up defenses, and fight off hordes—is extremely familiar. Even the concept of unique boss bouts reminds me of how State of Survival schedules major beast confrontations at specific times. I believe fans of previous games will find the concepts here familiar, and they may like seeing Resident Evil heroes in the same mobile survival mode.

I do not understand the point from the dead. If someone died, let them rest. I am tired of these alternate timelines. Why do we need to see Catherine Warren again? She had no big role and her role is Resident Evil 2 is just a corpse. I am also confused by this “Player” character. If it’s not Ethan, why make him look like him? I think the game is trying too hard. Tower defense is okay, but I don’t feel excited. I liked Resident Evil for its story, not because of zombie shooting on a phone.

This actually feels like the best way to do a non-canon spin-off. Instead of pretending it’s part of the real story, they’re just having fun. I respect that. Not everything has to be so serious. Tower defense makes sense too, considering how often you’re defending a position in Resident Evil games.

The Mortem creature looks terrifying based on the description. I hope they give us a lore file or something about where it came from. I also want to know who that blue-uniform woman is.

Honestly, I’m not sure how to feel. The “fanfiction” vibe kind of bothers me. I get that it’s a separate timeline, but why not just make a new IP? Mixing all these characters together feels weird . Like, Marvin is alive? Sure. Catherine Warren is alive? Fine. But it doesn’t feel like Resident Evil anymore. I know it’s just a mobile spinoff, but still. When I play RE, I want tension, horror, and realism within the universe. This sounds like a Resident Evil theme park. I’ll probably still download it, but I doubt I’ll play it for long.

As a rare fan of Resident Evil: Resistance, I’m just happy Becca made it into this game. She was one of my mains, and I feel like Resistance never got the love it deserved. Seeing her here gives me a bit of hope that maybe the rest of the Resistance cast will show up too. I’d love to see January, Tyrone, and Valerie again—kind of like a reunion of the Scooby Gang. They had great chemistry and really made Resistance feel like a different kind of RE experience. If Survivor Unit is already playing loose with the timeline, there’s no reason not to bring them all back. Honestly, if I can build a squad with Becca, January, and Marvin, that’s already a dream team.

I really hope Ark Thompson shows up as DLC. He might not be the most famous Resident Evil character, but he definitely has a cult following—especially among fans who grew up watching those old ShadowLeggy parodies on YouTube. Ark was always treated like the “weird cousin” of the franchise, but that’s exactly why people love him. Survivor Unit feels like the perfect place to bring him back. It’s non-canon, it’s experimental, and it’s already bringing in obscure characters like Alyssa and Kendo. If you’re giving Marvin and Catherine Warren some screen time, why not give Ark a chance too? Fans have kept his name alive all these years—it would be a fun surprise and a nice nod to that side of the fandom.

I just really hope this game isn’t dead on arrival. I’ve been reading a lot of comments on Facebook and Reddit, and most of them are already being super negative about it. Some are saying it’s not a “real” Resident Evil game, others are making fun of the tower defense idea. I get that it’s different, but not every RE game has to be the same formula.
