Resident Evil: Survivor Unit Is Basically Fanfiction with Fixed Cameras

Resident Evil: Survivor Unit Is a Mobile Game Set in an Alternate Timeline

Capcom has announced Resident Evil: Survivor Unit, an upcoming mobile survival game launching on Android and iOS by the end of 2025. Developed in collaboration with Aniplex and JoyCity, the game is now open for pre-registration on both major app stores.

Unlike the main Resident Evil games, Resident Evil: Survivor Unit takes place in an alternate timeline. Like Resident Evil: Resistance and The Ghost Survivors DLC, it explores “what-if” scenarios that allow for impossible team-ups and returns from the dead, because in this universe, canon is more of a suggestion.

Classic Style with a Mobile Twist

Resident Evil: Survivor Unit revives some beloved features from the early days of the franchise:

  • Fixed camera angles, like the ones that made everyone bump into walls in 1996

  • Puzzle-solving mechanics, because zombie survival is meaningless without a good statue puzzle

  • No voice acting, giving players a quiet apocalypse (and maybe fewer cheesy one-liners)

  • A squad-based system where you control a team of 3 or more characters

  • Tower defense-style combat that plays like Plants vs. Zombies if the plants had assault rifles

And while Capcom and Aniplex handle the franchise side, JoyCity brings their mobile game expertise to the table. Known for hits like Game of Dice and Gunship Battle, JoyCity’s experience with real-time strategy and resource-based gameplay likely informs Survivor Unit’s tactical systems.

Old Foes and New Nightmares

Expect a buffet of familiar monsters, zombies, Lickers, Cerberus dogs, and new horrors exclusive to this timeline.

Chief among them is Mortem, a newly revealed boss creature. Mortem is part ghostly humanoid, part demonic flower, and part dragon nightmare. It has a pale, long-haired upper body that floats above fleshy, wing-like petals and tentacle roots that pulse like infected plant matter. Basically, it looks like a failed Umbrella experiment and a dark fantasy RPG boss had a baby, and it’s mad about it.

Mortem’s otherworldly look adds a surreal layer that goes beyond standard B.O.W. design, and it appears to play a major boss role in the game.

The Playable Cast

The roster brings together beloved characters, underused NPCs, and some intriguing new faces:

  • Leon, Claire, Ada (RE2 Remake)

  • Jill, Carlos (RE3 Remake)

  • Barry Burton (RE1 Remake)

  • Robert Kendo and Catherine Warren, resurrected thanks to timeline loopholes

  • Marvin Branagh, finally off the floor and on your team

  • Becca Woolett from Resident Evil: Resistance

  • Alyssa Ashcroft from Outbreak, confirmed to be Grace’s mother (Grace being the protagonist of Resident Evil 9, who is not yet born in this timeline)

Also in the mix:

  • A blonde-haired man labeled simply as “Player”– likely a customizable avatar, not Ethan Winters, but close enough to make fans look twice

  • A biracial woman with natural curls, in a blue uniform resembling Grace’s, likely original to this timeline

And no, Chris Redfield isn’t here. He’s canonically in Europe in this game and the real timeline, hopefully not punching any more rocks.

Gameplay Breakdown

Executive producer Shinji Hashimoto shared a 25-minute deep dive, confirming that Resident Evil: Survivor Unit will focus on:

  • Squad-based survival

  • Lane-based tower defense mechanics

  • Fixed-camera navigation

  • Puzzle-solving challenges

  • No voice acting, which might be a relief depending on your tolerance for 90s voiceovers

The combat emphasizes strategic deployment, choosing the right survivors and placing them in the right lanes to fend off waves of enemies. Resident Evil meets Plants vs. Zombies may sound strange, but it works when the plants are trained S.T.A.R.S. operatives.

Conclusion

Resident Evil: Survivor Unit mixes nostalgia with mobile gameplay quirks to deliver something strange and promising. By stepping outside canon, it allows for creative matchups, disturbing new monsters like Mortem, and a fresh take on what Resident Evil can be, without rewriting the main timeline.

With Capcom’s legacy, Aniplex’s storytelling, and JoyCity’s mobile experience, this collaboration could surprise fans of both old-school Resident Evil and mobile survival games.

Side Note: Since Resident Evil: Survivor Unit doesn’t follow canon, we can’t help but wonder, will we see nods to Operation Raccoon City, the Gun Survivor games, or even those weird-but-iconic live-action movie versions? No rules means anything is possible.
