Re-Popping My Toku Cherry

Mm, I feel the same way about most tokusatsu music, or at least the ones that make it their subject. There are some exceptions, but I can't find myself liking most of them.

We're getting kind of off subject now, but I even like Geki's theme. I thought the days of catchy, well-composed Toku theme songs were over. Although I still love the Hurricanger and Abaranger themes.

well, I guess its time for me to get back on the trail.

I am pretty spoiled and VERY particular though.

my favorites have been Garo (nothing seems to top this for me) Majirangers and Nexus.

i've TRIED to get into the Rider series but i just can't. theres always something that takes me OUT of the show, like in the last one with that damned talking belt buckle bat.

I'd like to have something just heavy hitting like garo without the corny enemies or awful humor. (even though majiranger had both, it was darn good over all)

Well Gekiranger would be good if you liked Magi.

You might also like Ultraseven X and Cutie Hony the Live, I wasn't a big fan of them, but they're slightly more adult shows that do different takes on the genre.

After I finish these two, I hope to check out an older series or two that I never got the chance to see. Anybody got any recommendations?

I dunno which ones you have/haven't seen, so what are the most interesting looking/sounding that you didn't get to see yet?

After a substantial hiatus, I've started watching Toku again, yay! It started with me getting the new Kaiju Big Battel DVD, then popping in the last Kamen Rider V3 disc out of reinstated interest, and now I've determined to make it through Ultraman Nexus (something I could never accomplish in the past) and a modern sentai series. I chose Gekiranger, and so far I like it a lot. It's got that lighthearted, sunny fun feeling that's mandatory for Toku, IMO. So far, so fresh!

It actually took me three tries from the beginning to get through Ultraman Nexus, so don't feel bad or anything. It's actually a very well written show, it just takes a little effort to peel away the layers I think. It wasn't until the third time that the significance of Jun's situation really hit me. Stick with it and I think you'll be satisfied for the most part.

IRON KING and SUPER ROBOT RED BARON

Grab these if you can, or if you haven't already. This goes for ALL of you, not just Bolt! Navarre recently shut down BCI Eclipse (the portion of the company that published these titles here in the States) so chances are that once they're gone, they're gone for good.

Not sure how to best describe IRON KING. It's a giant hero show, sort of like Ultraman, but with a few twists. What I can say is that the main hero Gentaro Shizuka is everything guys like Tendou from Kabuto wish they were. The loner that all the women hate, but can't seem to stay away from and often end up dying for. In one episode he's ready to let a village burn in order to stop the enemy's giant robot. Definitely one the old school, aberrant heroes that we don't see in tokusatsu anymore.

RED BARON is a great giant robot show. I feel it takes the best aspects of Ultraman (the team, vehicles and secret spy type base) and Giant Robo and combines them together. There are a lot of cool "retro" designs among all the robot's Red Baron takes on and a lot of on the ground action with the SSI fighting the Iron Alliance's henchmen.

Both shows feature lots of "unrefined" 70's style fight scenes. Lots of flailing kicks and over exaggerated punches. Plenty of 70's babes too.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention. RED BARON's theme song rocks! :buttrock:

I'll second Iron King. I haven't actually watched the last couple episodes, but it's pretty enjoyable.

I actually think you can pick it up on deep discount for like 20 bucks.

the first ep is kinda meh, but as the story progressed the subplots are what are awesome.
