Re-Popping My Toku Cherry

After a substantial hiatus, I've started watching Toku again, yay! It started with me getting the new Kaiju Big Battel DVD, then popping in the last Kamen Rider V3 disc out of reinstated interest, and now I've determined to make it through Ultraman Nexus (something I could never accomplish in the past) and a modern sentai series. I chose Gekiranger, and so far I like it a lot. It's got that lighthearted, sunny fun feeling that's mandatory for Toku, IMO. So far, so fresh!

go for Keitai 7 next :) Should be over with and all subbed by teh time you get done with geki ... :) Geki gets darker later on but is still great :D Fave & only rangers series I've ever watched

Nexus was boring in the first part but takes a great turn around episode 24, if I remember. Nexus has a super great last 10 episodes. I almost gave up on it when it suddenly took a 180 turn.

Cool, glad you're sorta getting back into toku. :O

I always liked Nexus the entire...well, not the entire way, that span of episodes with Komon emoing felt like it went of forever, otherwise, it was a good watch. I was going to recommend Gekiranger since it is one of the better recent Sentai. Keitai Sosakan 7 is a pretty cool series too, but a lot of the episodes have this really pointless feel to them, not like filler, they just flow really oddly...and since it's more of a mystery toku show, there's next to no real fighting. But it's cool to see former Kamen Riders in a new show.

You should also try Kiva, it's pretty decent at first and then kinda lulls for about ten episodes, but it picks up pretty amazingly afterward. And if not that, there's the awesomeness that is Ryukendo.

Or you could also try that Cutie Honey show, which is essentially just really busty women in skimpy outfits with some bits of a plot going on or so I hear.

You're gonna love GekiRanger.... except for Jan. Well, I hated that kid at least. Rio-sama was the fucking man tho.

I really like the Nexus setup, but honestly some of the Knight Raider drama gets boring for me. I would really rather the emphasis stay on Jun. I remember back when it aire I got about 8 episodes in and just said **** it because it was too dull for me, but I'm up to episode 12 now and I'm still interested. Faust is badass.

I'd heard a lot of bad things about Geki, but I really dig it. The martial arts theme is cool, especially if you're a kung fu movie fan like me, there's a lot of subtle nods of the head in there. I also don't mind the characters, even if they are pretty generic. The suits are refreshing and the action is really hot. Plus, like I said, it's got a really fun, lighthearted air about it, which is great. I honestly get kind of tired of these really dark/mysterious/angsty Toku that have been coming out lately.

After I finish these two, I hope to check out an older series or two that I never got the chance to see. Anybody got any recommendations?

That's not very wakiwaki, Keith.

You could always check out the original Kamen Rider series someone just uploaded the entire thing a while ago. It's good if you want something that's not totally dark...emo...whatever the word is, and the first 12 episodes have a really great gritty style going on.

How far are you into Gekiranger? I don't actually hear too many things about it, which I guess makes it kinda overrated since there are areas where it was kinda flawed, but it was a great ride for the most part, especially almost any major story after the Kageki arc.

Just finished the fifth episode. Surprisingly, Jan doesn't really get on my nerves. I think because he reminds me of some of my friends.

I loved jan his wacky crazyness was the only thing that kept me going I found the first 10ish or so episodes terribly boring & with out him entertaining me through out it I would have dropped is fast!
