Question about HDTVs...

Does anyone know what the basic quality is for non-HD channels? I don't even have HD but I've been hearing some complaints about it. I know some people are just uber picky so I don't know if I'm just being paranoid. I mean, it can't be any worse than any standard definition TV, right?

I've been trying to hold onto my standard definition TV as long as possible and it's served me well in the past but it's on its last legs and HD seems to be the only TVs made these days.

I feel bad for people who are grasping to the SD Tvs and DVDs still.....

You really don't know what ur missing with the new ****. Sure it's not a nesessity in life but it sure as **** is great.

As for HD channels, no idea.. I don't bother with that ****. Plus it's super expensive. Keeping ur HD viewing strictly to Blu-ray (Movies/TV show sets) is always the way to go, especially on a fixed income.

So if you don't pay for HD, then how's the quality with your TV shows?

If you wanna upgrade to an HDTV, I recommend buying either LED or Plasma TVs (in either 1080p or 720p, no interlaced resolution). LCD TVs don't look that great. Then you need to contact your cable or satellite provider for a box that has component and HDMI (I recommend connecting via HDMI cable since they make the picture look much better).

As for DVDs and Blu-ray, sure Blu-ray is nice, but many DVD players have HDMI and if you have a 1080p LED or Plasma TV and watch movies with those kind of DVD players, there's barely any difference between that and watching Blu-ray.

Blu-ray is a bit overrated IMO.

Wow.. That's quite the suggestion. Actually my parents have WOW also and an HDTV also and don't seem to have any problems. Although theirs was probably on the expensive side.

How does something like this look? I'm looking something somewhat affordable as I'm not exactly loaded. It lists both LED and LCD so I don't know.

SD channels do look nicer (cleaner, crisper) on smaller tube TVs when compared to HDTVs, but really? You're going to have to decide how much of a videophile you are. It's not big enough of a deal to make me /not/ want my flat screen TV.

And LCD HDTVs are just fine, just shop around, take your time, look at reviews, and keep an eye out for deals.

Well, if you buy an HD TV and all you're gonna do is watch DVD's and standard cable, of course you won't be tapping into the full potential of that tv. Get a PS3 or somethin for playing and storing your media, if your media collection is mostly digital (torrented) just file transfer that over to the media player of your choice (i prefer ps3) and hook it on up to the TV. Always download the highest resolution you can.

I have digital cable with a select few HD channels. My ps3 plays blu-ray disk just fine along with any other downloaded media I put on it. I usually download the highest quality of movies (or the blu-ray formats)

go for 1080p compatibility. dont get JUST 720p. you'll regret that in the future when you get more into higher quality stuff.
