Quesada promoted to CCO & editorial discussion

Honestly it doesn't mean much, just expanding his duties from comics and animation to cover other media ventures namely television, movies, and videogames.

I just wanted to use this as a chance to discuss something that I have been thinking about for a bit now, the failure of the editorial departments at the big two. Now since I am not that familiar with DC if someone wants take that I would appreciate it. Now what I mean by editorial failure is that instead of functioning as editors, the EICs of both in particular, have decided that creative control is more important. Be it forcing superheroes get annulments from the devil or committing genocide there seems to be a bigger and bigger movement that their personal views should dictate the course of the line. Which makes very little sense for Quesada due to his history primarily as a penciller with little to no writing experience prior to his promotion to EIC, which shows in his lack of long term planning after he has made his various decries.

But that is minor complaint in light of his actual failure as the EIC. First is the late shipping of several titles, including event books. Now this should be the number one responsibility for editorial but constantly finds itself dismissed. In my mind if an artist can't handle a monthly make arrangements so you can get done ahead of time or don't take one on in the first place. Also the excuses Quesada trots out doesn't do him any favors. The first is that these are our top talent so they deserve extra consideration, which smacks of a lack of professionalism and shows favoritism. Second it is false premise, they are only the top talents most of the time due being put on high profile books. The simple fact is that if an artist demonstrates they are unable to keep to a monthly schedule then they should not get any monthly work. Quesada's second excuse invokes the fact that Watchman shipped late so we should allow for late shipping. The first problem is that despite being a triumph it is still unprofessional that Watchman shipped late. Second Watchman has more of an excuse due the sheer amount of art on the actual pages, most being filled with highly detail panels compared to splash page filled books of today. Third Watchmen was a self-contained story that had no other books depending or relating to the outcome of it's story. The latest example being Siege but we all are familiar with more.

Moving on, admittedly this isn't a big of complaint as the other but it deserves mention. There has been an increase of mistakes and errors, especially in regard to continuity. Quesada has gone on the record for his dislike of continuity since it "hobbles the writer's ability to tell a good story". Which is very disrespectful to past creators and their work. The simple fact is that comics are built on the works of the past and just by dismissing previous efforts hurts the characters and shows that the reader doesn't have to care anymore.

Seems like it just means more of the same problems really. The movies and cartoons will probably remain very A-List because that's what sells, and they'll go for the cheap options whenever possible, or put too much limitation on the creative teams just like they do for the comics.
