The roguelike genre has always been a fun genre, but it could be so much better with some more Dinosaurs! The Action Roguelike RPG, Dinotica, has answered the call and is currently in early access! Developed by Celestial Studio, Dinotica brings the roguelike genre into the far flung past of Dinos and cavemen. You play as a humble human, working to survive out in the prehistoric wilds. However, you don’t just have to survive alone, as you have plenty of dinosaur pals to help you! Throughout the game, you’ll encounter many dinosaurs, which you can bring into your merry band. You can bring them into your explorations, empowering and fighting alongside you in the wilds. They aren’t just good for battle, though, as they have use back at your home base. Similar to other roguelikes like Darkest Dungeon, Loop Hero, and Cult of the Lamb, you build up a home base in between explorations. You build up farmland and buildings, using your dinosaurs to tend to your home. Whether it’s for resources, breeding dinosaurs, and growing your strength, your base is instrumental in your success. Of course, what would a roguelike be without explorable dungeons? After chilling in your base, you […]

I really like the idea of mixing dinosaurs with a roguelike structure. Usually these games just give you different weapons and enemies, but adding dinosaurs as both companions and workers at the base sounds very fresh. I enjoy when games allow me to feel progress even after I lose a run. The farming and breeding systems sound like they will give me that feeling. I think the risk will be how balanced the game is. Sometimes developers put too much focus on collection systems and then the combat feels weak. If Dinotica can keep battles challenging while also rewarding players with base progress, then it can stand out. I want to try the demo to see if it feels smooth.

I do not usually play roguelikes because they can feel repetitive, but I am interested in this because of the base-building and farming. That is something I enjoy in games like Stardew Valley. Having dinosaurs help me with farming sounds fun and relaxing. Then going into the dungeons adds action. It is like two games in one. I think this mix will make it easier for new players to enjoy the genre without feeling too much pressure.

I have some doubts about multiplayer. Local co-op and remote play can be fun, but roguelikes usually require a lot of focus and personal planning. I wonder how it will work when two players are trying to manage resources, relics, and dino breeding at the same time. If they design it carefully, it could be a highlight, but if not, it may feel messy. I would wait for more feedback from players before I buy it.

The name change makes sense. If they had kept Dino Topia, many people would confuse it with the book or TV series. Dinotica is easier to remember and still keeps the dinosaur theme. A unique name is very important if they want to build a strong fanbase and avoid legal issues.

What really catches my attention is the number of bosses. Sixty unique bosses is a huge promise. Many roguelikes suffer when the enemy variety becomes predictable. If every boss feels different, then replaying will stay interesting for a long time. I just hope the quality is consistent and not rushed.

Personally, I like the prehistoric setting. Most roguelikes take place in fantasy dungeons or sci-fi worlds. This one feels different. The mix of cavemen, crops, and dinosaurs creates a world that is unusual but still believable. I want to see how they design the environments, especially the four maps they mentioned.

I think this game will rise or fall depending on the balance between survival and progression. If farming and breeding take too much time, people will lose patience. If dungeon combat is too easy, people will feel bored. The studio must find the right middle point. I am curious to see how early access helps them adjust the systems.
