Had just been looking on /m/ see the random OP raging at O-T etc. etc.

Then opens up HJU and see this.

Yeah I woke up and looked back at this thread and in my sleep-addled brain, thought, "wait did I open 4chan by mistake?"

Personally I prefer O-T, because I like to watch my episodes as soon as subs are available, but I have no problem with TV-N.

Other than the leaving of randomnly picked -tachi and random japanese words, that is. Sometimes they translate, sometimes they don't, and I'd prefer if they were at least consistent. I'm not gonna start complaining about how -tachi is not a honorific and has no reason to be left in, because this is not the place nor the time to flame.

With O-T, the only problem I have is the translation of proper names. The Go-Onger villains are a great example. People names are translatable too, and sometimes are obvious puns as much as the villains' are, yet they keep the original. If you choose to translate proper names, then IMO you should translate all of them.

I prefer Over-Ti.me because they are very quick and do not put silly things before or after the videos like TV-Nihon do.

That is all.

The blame for this lies pretty much entirely at my door (Heat hates Go-On and refuses to touch the Go-On stuff) and the feedback I've been getting is mostly negative on that front, so it's probably not something I'll do in future but... I don't know. I can't really easily describe it, but I guess the Go-Onger villain names don't feel like names, they just feel like poorly disguised puns. Like... I dunno, Tendou Souji is a pretty obvious one in terms of "LOOK I HAVE A MEANING", but at the same time it kind of feels like a valid name, you know?

I just can't look at Babacheed where his name literally means "poop poopyhead" and take that seriously as a name. I dunno. There's kind of a line in the sand that Go-On steps over and goes "LOOK GUYS, WE'RE MAKING TERRIBLE PUNS!" and jumps up and down calling your attention to it constantly. Therein lies the boundary, purely IMO.

All I can really say on the issue is this:

When I've attempted to show non-Toku savvy friends certain shows, they always seem to respond better to the OT sub than the TVN ones.

With TVN, even when they enjoyed the shows themselves, there was always some issue with how things were translated (or not translated in some cases) that left one or two of them complaining at the screen over it and detracting from the experience.

So I gotta go with OT, both because I also prefer their style myself (I'll take something that isn't literally correct if it's in the service of making a joke/pun/cultural reference comprehensible to someone without the background to instantly understand it) and because it's a style that, in my experience, is less prone to scaring off potential newcomers to the fandom.

Who are Over-Time and Tv-Nihon??? :169:

They are the youths who set sail across the information superhighway in pursuit of adventure and glory!

Raising their flags against the TV-Nihon fansub empire, the brilliant men and women who take pride in being called pirates!

They are...

SUPER FAST SUBBERS, OVER-TIME!

(But in all seriousness I enjoy the Over-Time subs more -they're more professional, can be shared with friends without the honorifics and mis-translations / non-translations removing them from the storytelling. They also don't jump around the screen and dance and flash like I have the attention span of a goldfish)
