Okay I got confused (as I am easily wont to do)
Zedd first appears in The Mutiny which DOES use Zyu2 footage for Pirantishead. The first real usage of a DaiRanger monster wouldn't come for ten full episodes, the tube monster thingy I think.
But they were using Dairanger footage for the mecha at that point in time and I don't Zedd interacting too much with his newly created monsters. The only time I remember him being in the same shot as any of them was Turbanshell I think.
So they had switched to Dairanger footage for the mecha just not for the monsters yet.

As I understand it, most, if not all of the Zyu2 footage included megazord battles with the season one Megazord.
When Saban decided to do the zord switch over for the season 2 premire, they did the hack job editing (let's be honest, here), which is why until they used the DaiRanger monsters and footage, the Thunder Megazord and the monster were never in the same shot together.
