New "Avatar: the Last Airbender" Project In The Works

I'll go ahead and post a summary/review of the episode from what I remember.

[HIDE]It opens with some Water Tribe members showing up to Korra's parents house. These members are the ones who are tasked with finding the next Avatar. They have already checked a few places and ask her parents why they believe Korra is the one. Korra (at this point a little pudgy kid) then comes in by blasting down a wall. With a shout of "I'm the Avatar, you gotta deal with it!" she proceeds to show off some Earth, Fire, and Water bending.

We then fast forward to a 16 year old Korra doing her Fire bending test (this is one of the clips that we already saw). We see some members of the White Lotus (including Katara) discussing whether Korra is ready to study Air bending, or not. The Fire Bending instructor feels that while she has done well with the physical side of bending, her spiritual side still needs a lot of work. Korra argues that training with Tenzin is the best way to learn the spiritual side. In the end the White lotus agree and send a summons for him. Korra is excited about this news. She celebrates by taking her polar bear dog, Naga, outside the fortress for a run.

Tenzin and his family arrive on a flying bison. The 3 kids immediately go wild with some air bending. Katara tells Pema (Tenzin's pregnant wife) that she senses the next child will also be an airbender (much to Pema's dismay). One of the kids asks Katara if they ever found out what happened to Zuko's mother, but Katara is distracted before she can answer. Tenzin tells Korra that he won't be staying, and has to return to Republic City, since he is needed there. Korra argues that she needs him as well since she has to learn Air bending, and he's the only living master. When that fails to convince him she decides to go to Republic City with him, but Tenzin, and the White Lotus members say that it's too dangerous and she must remain in the fortress. More arguing does not change their minds. Tenzin and his family return to Republic City the next day. Korra decides to run away, so she sneaks out, and gets Naga. As seen in another available clip, Katara catches Korra, but agrees that she should go. Korra stows away on a ship, and finally arrives at Republic City.

Upon arriving at the city Korra wants to head straight to Air Temple Island, Tenzin's home. However Naga has other ideas. sniffing out food, Naga begins running toward a food stand causing some car crashes and collateral damage along the way. Once there though Korra realizes that she has no money to pay for it. Korra makes her way to a park and has Naga get some fish from the lake that she cooks. She befriends a vagabond living in a bush near by who explains that Republic City isn't as glamorous as one might think. A guard runs up to them shouting that fishing is prohibited there, forcing Korra to run away.

While walking Korra has her first run in with an anti-bending activist. He is attempting to convince people that benders oppress non-benders, and that they must band together against the bending elitists. Korra gets into an argument with the guy, which ends up only helping him get his point across.

Korra ends up in a market district and asks for directions to Air Temple Island. Unfortunately a group of thugs called the Triple Threat Triad show up, and start extorting a shopkeeper. Korra calls them out, and proceeds to best all three of the guys at their own element. They try to escape in their car, but Korra flips it with the ever popular drop kick Earth bending.

Some Metal bending police arrive and arrest the triad. They then point out the damage that Korra caused while apprehending the thugs, and try to arrest her as well. After a city wide chase sequence, they finally succeed. Korra is brought before Chief Lin Bei Fong. Lin is not impressed by Korra's Avatar title, and considers the friend ship of her mother (Toph), and Korra's previous incarnation ancient history. However, Tenzin shows up and manages to have the charges dropped by taking responsibility, and paying for the damages.

Tenzin tells Korra that she has to return home. Korra argues with him (surprise, surprise). She says that after experiencing the city for herself she understands why he has to stay. However, she believes the city also needs the Avatar back if they want to restore it to the symbol of peace that Aang meant it to be. While at first against keeping her there, Tenzin changes his mind when he and his kids are about to see her off and he stares up at his fathers statue. He agrees that the city needs the Avatar again, and let's Korra stay.

The next day (or maybe a few days later) Korra is having a press conference. She is asked a few questions. Was she trying to send a threat to the triad? Will she be working with Chief Bei Fong, dealing with the Anti-benders (this takes on a new meaning for you British folks, doesn't it?), or both? She says she doesn't know, and doesn't have a plan. Korra then gives a speech about working together, rebuild city of peace, power of friendship, etc etc. We then cut to some of the Anti-benders listening to the speech. They ask Ahmon what he wants to do. The camera pans up to his masked face as he says that they will have to accelerate their plans. Cut to credits.

All in all I found this to be a good first episode. It introduces us to some of the central characters and plots. I like Korra a lot. Despite the fact that she is 16, her hot hotheadedness makes her seem stubborn. Where as Aang had felt held back and limited by his status as the Avatar, it seems Korra has fully embraced it. The fact that she has already mastered 3 elements (oddly enough she seems to prefer fire, then earth, and lastly water) means that she has the skill to back up her attitude. Tenzin and his family should be fun to watch. In fact the family dynamic in this series is a nice change. Tenzin has a surviving mother, and a full family. Korra's parents are also alive. This should give us a nice change from Aang's story where the group either had no family, or had a dysfunctional one. The humor is as good as ever, especially the in jokes aimed at returning fans.

The art is as gorgeous as ever. While seeing cars and microphones can seem a little odd, we have to remember that Airbender had zeppelins, and jet-ski's. Besides, 70 years is more than enough time to advance technology to that point. We also have a return of the animal hybrids, including a platypus bear. The music kicks ass, and the voice acting is top notch.

So that's my summary of the first episode, along with my thoughts on it. This may be a long read, but I hope you enjoy.

EDIT: Also, the first episode can be watched on March 24 if 100,000 likes/shares are gained from stuff on korranation.com. They're currently bout 4/5 of the way there.
