ok im one of the those guys that totally love KR and totally hate sentai. however im going to swallow my pride and force myself to watch sentai. with that, i want to know what would be the best series i could go for that would best hook me as a fan (it might even be impossible). ive previewed episodes of geki, bouken, deka, and magi. nothing is winning me over.

Dairanger.

Maskman.

Bioman.

Kakuranger (Kane Kosugi alone is worth it).

But, yeah, I would start off with Dairanger first.

If you don't mind no subs, Maskman, Jetman, Changeman, and Gingaman are all pretty good places to start.

Though if you can, stick with Geki, it has easily the best background story for villains in years.

Hmm.

If you are coming off of modern Rider shows TimeRanger could be a easier transition. Granted it's one of my favorites so there's probably some bias BUT I'm just thinking that if you're used to a slighty more dramatic thing with more modern effects it could be a good way to go.

Just keep in mind that sentai has a different vibe from Rider and try not to be dissmissive of older stuff because it might seem weird to you.

Also watching the sentai team-up movies can be a good place to start. While these don't always reflect the exact tone of the series involved you get two teams for the price of one and surely at least one you'll wanna see more of. Of those I suggest MegaRanger vs. Gingaman, Gingaman vs. GoGo V, and GoGo V vs. TimeRanger.

For series:

Old School flavor: Maskman, Jetman, Bioman.

Newer series: MegaRanger, GoGo V, TimeRanger, DekaRanger, Boukenger

I don't think Dekaranger is that great of a series to start off with. He probably wants something a little bit more serious, or at least not insanely comedic, which Dekaranger isn't all the time, but I think there are better series that he could start off with, Timeranger being one of them. Come to think of it, the writer from Timeranger did Ryuki and is doing Den-O, so you may like it.

i remember watching jetman as a kid and i really liked it, or whatever i like whatever memory i have left of it. but yeah mattcomics is right, i really dont enjoy comedy in my toku. i prefer really gritty dark stuff, so if timeranger has that maybe ill start from there.

I'd say start him off with some good ol' 80s stuff because that's when sentai was at it's finest. Bioman is always a good one to start with.

Newer ones come off more as toy commercials and pretty light-hearted.

lol is there any special reason behind choosing all the "......man" shows ?

Back to the Topic at hand, I think it would be better if u stick to the old sentai. If u need subbed seasons, I think u should try Dekaranger.

hmm is there any place i can get the translation scripts for the old shows? not being able to understand old school toku is one of my primary motivations to take up learning jap this summer.
