No sooner does IDW announce a reprint omnibus of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, Archie Comics’ adaption of the TV show Turtles (which were in turn adaptions from a comic book)…than NECA reveals these cool-looking TMNT figures based on that comic, faithfully reproducing the rubbery Ken Mitchroney art in 3D. These figures actually come from a specific issue: Number 7, the one where the Turtles were transported to a wrestling tournament in space, and were forced to fight against their will by Stump, literally a talking tree. There they faced opponents Leatherhead, a giant dog named Cryin’ Houn’, and weirdly enough, Ace Duck, who was a muscle-bound superhero in this world and not a TV show character. Should I also mention that the way the Turtles were kidnapped was getting swallowed by a giant floating cow head? And that the cow head (whose name was Cudley) became a recurring element for the next few issues, confusing everyone who picked up the crossover Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet Archie (that is how they got into Riverdale, Cudley spit them out there)? Okay, wait—did you say a floating cow head kidnapped them? I’m sorry but I can’t stop laughing. I didn’t know TMNT comics got that weird. I only knew the TV show and a few of the movies. But this is great. I kind of want to read that issue now. I don’t collect figures, but I love hearing about stuff like this. TMNT had a lot more going on than I thought.

I don’t get the hype. Honestly, I think these figures look ugly. The faces are weird and the proportions feel off. Maybe they match the comic art, but that doesn’t mean they look good as actual figures. I know it’s supposed to be the style, but to me it just looks sloppy. For that price, I expect something that at least looks cool on a shelf. These don’t. I’ll pass.

TMNT Adventures was my favorite TMNT comic because it embraced the strange and surreal. Issue 7 really showed that. Stump and Cudley were odd ideas, but they worked somehow. I think people forget how creative this series got. I appreciate NECA recognizing that and making figures that celebrate those moments. Cryin’ Houn’ might not mean much to most people, but to me, this is history.

There’s something very charming about these figures. I like that NECA focused on the comic style instead of just remaking the TV designs again. The soft, bouncy look of the characters in this issue gives them a unique personality. I also like how the article explained the backstory. I didn’t know about this wrestling plot or the cow character, but now I’m curious. Maybe I’ll check out the omnibus IDW is releasing.

I love how weird TMNT Adventures was. The story with Cudley and the wrestling in space is so silly but fun. I like when comics don’t take themselves too seriously. NECA choosing this issue for figures is so cool. They look just like the art, especially the faces. I think I’ll get the Turtles set for sure. I don’t know if I can afford all of them right now, but I want to support this kind of release.
