Okay, so I've caught up to episode 175 of the animated naruto series. This is the latest episode available with fansubs on NarutoHQ.com.

So here are my critiques and comments:

First, if you're watching this series, stop at Episode 174. Episode 175 starts a new story and leaves you hanging, although it looks like it'll only be a 3 episode story.

Critiques:

The series is excellent with one problem... it moves too slowly. There are over 175 episodes, which is approximately 7 seasons, and only around two years have passed since the beginning. Naruto is developing much too slowly for me. From what I read there's a point in the manga where there's a "time skip" and apparently Naruto is more skilled, which I'm waiting on in the anime. I mean, he occasionally shows some cunning and creativity, but mostly he's still a "frontal assault with ultimate attack" character, and if it fails the first time, he just keeps trying.

I think they could use the filler episodes to flesh out secondary characters in the series, like Kakashi, Jiraiya, Iruka, or even Orochimaru & Sasuke, or hell, Itachi and his group, rather than focusing every episode around Naruto and a rotating team between the other 10 characters. Afterall, Jiraiya (Ero Sennin) has gone off on his own, leaving Naruto without a teacher, to search for information about Orochimaru... but they never show his adventures (which tend to be humorous and badass in the episodes he's in with Naruto). I just feel that if you're going to use filler episodes, you can put them to better use than more pointless missions focused around the main character.

~~~
As I said though, the series is good and I've become attached to/interested in multiple characters, and I find 80% of the episodes entertaining. However, like many other anime, they drag some things out too long and don't progress it along quickly enough.
I give Naruto a solid 8 out of 10, and recommend against the dubbed version if you want to fully enjoy the series. The dubs aren't bad, but they're just not as good.
As an aside, I've begun acquiring the Manga to check it out. So far the early Manga are very close to the Anime, so I hope that continues and I won't need to read them all.
Indeed.
I'm just eager to see and end to this arc. I'm not especially fond of it and am a bit more than tired of Orochimaru. :P
Orochimaru is the main antagonist in the show, though. He was more powerful than the Hokage. They fight plenty of his subordinates along the way, as well as a random bad guy here or there. I kind of prefer the "unreachable enemy in the background" type of antagonist. Not only would defeating Orochimaru would effectively end the series, or at the very least change it drastically, it would send this series down the road of so many other anime, such as DBZ, where they just continue to fight more and more powerful enemies until everything just gets ridiculous.
As an equivilent, imagine if GI Joe defeated Cobra, or Lufi found One Piece. The series CAN continue after that, but it's a totally different feel. Just like in Stargate SG-1 when they finally defeated Anubis and all of the Gua'uld system lords. The series kept going, but it's a whole 'nother ball game.
Besides, it's been clearly defined that none of the main cast can defeat Orochimaru, so they need to have Naruto grow as a character until it gets to a point where it's believable. It's already been said that the only person that can defeat him is Itachi, and strongly forshadowed that only Naruto has the potential to become powerful enough in the future.
I disagree. One Piece is just too silly for me. Naruto is the proper mix of silly and serious.
Huh... I feel One Piece has the perfect balance, but wait a second... you still haven't seen the subtitled version, have you? Could somebody tell him how vastly different the experience of One Piece is in its original form versus the 4Crap version?
Not to get too far off topic, but I just can't stand Lufi. I've seen the first 3 or 4 eps on fansub, and beyond that just the show on Cartoon Network.
Anyway, we can return to our regularly scheduled Naruto discussion now :)
