Narnia 3 Delayed Because of Disney

I think Disney learns not to put Narnia in the summer.

If the house of mouse is wise, "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" should be a Thanksgiving/Christmas time release.

Theatrical Performance
Total US Gross $141,621,490
International Gross $277,868,796
Worldwide Gross $419,490,286

It doubled it's box office take. That means it's a hit as far as money at the theatres goes. There is no reason for disney to have done this.

Hm must've got my numbers mixed up with something else. While that number is good, its still a huge disappointment compared with the first one and doesn't really justify the big $200m budget they gave the movie.

Gotta agree with you there, the only blockbuster of this holiday season is that godawful Day the Earth Stood Still. If they had released it around this time it would've done way bigger numbers.

Okay people, reality check.

Disney do not own the Narnia rights, Walden Media does. Disney's deal with WM was they co-finance and co-produce the vast majority of the films, sharing profits, however Disney decided to drop out of making any more Narnia films (I'll get into why below). This allows ANY studio out there free to make the third Narnia film, so in all likelihood the production schedule they were aiming for won't change that much.

Now, here's my reasoning why they left:

1) It's a very, very expensive film - we're talking $250 million for ONE film, where the profits aren't even all going to Disney

2) Silly production schedule, that would require travelling all over the world, when in reality the film could be shot in just one or two countries (Mexico and Los Angeles).

3) Walden Media are vocal Christians. Disney has to debate over everything. It is because of Walden Media's PG-only policy the films haven't be PG-13 from the start. And I believe the Jesus angle (and Santa's cameo) are other things Disney didn't want.

4) In this credit crunch era, all of Disney's films are being funded out of their backpockets, not the banks (who have stopped funding films). And Prince Caspian's returns were profitable, but disappointing.

For $250 million, Disney could fund at least 4 blockbusters, that could each make more money for Disney than Prince Caspian did (as they wouldn't have to share profits).

HAHAHAHAH... Show me 4 disney blockbustes that ARE NOT pixar created.

DtESS is a bomb really. It took a huge nose dive in it's second week. Marly and me has made more money than stood still.

Yeah, I think Prince Capsian would've dominated if they had chose to release it because there really isn't much competition. I guess they were afraid of Harry Potter until it got delayed.

Disney really hasn't been doing much these days, but i guess you can say that Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Enchanted, and the still playing Bolt are all decent sized hits.

Things should be turning around for Disney now under John Lassetter though, I think their upcoming The Princess and the Frog is going to do big numbers.
