Most Badass Red Ranger in Super Sentai

I'm kinda torn between Matoi and Alata.

Mostly because they both have the same quality of tanking through some incredibly intense beatings through sheer courage and determination to land the blows they need to save the day.

I just find someone who has to fight for all their big hero moments a lot more bad-ass than someone who breezes through everything.

In my opinion it is Date Kenta / Mega Red or Captain Marvelous / Gokai Red

Mega Red was a bad when he was p*ssed off and he killed Shibolena and her sister and Yugande single handly!!!

Gokai Red is a bad ass!! the guy listened to no one!! He was his own leader!!

It's Ryo/Ryuuranger. Think about it at the start of dairanger he was working at a restaurant completely oblivious as to who he really was. He went from clueless to a complete bad ass in one episode. Also the story with him and his father, Ryo's the japanese Luke Skywalker

And what's wrong with drinking milk? There are those like myself who aren't too fond of drinking stuff like beer, wine, champagne, etc. (basically, anything involved with alcohol), or those like myself aren't too fond of smoking or doing drugs, either.

I am straight-edge (No Alchohol, No Drugs, No smoking). I am just saying that the writers tried a little too hard to make him as goody-good as possible. That was one of the things that annoyed me, he goes to a bar, and gets milk? That just seemed off. Water would of been okay. But the fact that a bar serves milk, especially one like that, is kinda odd.

It is just a moment where the obvious attempt at making Hawk a good guy, came off out of place.

I think it was a deliberate attempt to show that Ryu and Gai were polar opposites, since Gai was a hard drinker and obviously Ryu isn't.

True. But I think what Go-Onger is trying to get across is that he feels the milk thing was a bit overkill and made Ryu look needlessly namby-pamby. Personally I think it was probably just something there meant to be funny rather than a serious illustration of who Ryu is as a person. But I think I can see where Go-Onger is coming from.

See myself, I dig good guys a lot. But one of the problems writers can sometimes do is that they can overplay it or get so enamored with villains or tweeners they end up making the good guy flat. ..and some will say "oh that's because good is boring". IMO that's cynical cliche bullshit.

It's all about the execution of the thing. For example if you give the villain some great monolouge where he preaches his grand philosophical reasons for doing what he's doing and then the only comeback you give the hero is something like "Not if I can help it!" then without really meaning to you've kind of made good look lame, which you really don't want for any story but it's especially bad for a superhero story.

Something that I've seen and enjoy in both Sentai and Rider, toku heroes in general I think is that they will often have the villain sort of lay out his negative viewpoint but then the heroes in the dialog challenge it. Sort of combating the villain's hateful outlook as much as physically combating their forces.


..and this is probably way more analysis than anyone should devote to the idea of Ryu drinking milk. :redface2:

The way in episode three (?) Ryu walks into the Golden Gate and asks for a hot milk, it always seemed to me like it was...kind of a way to piss Gai off. Yeah, Ryu's a square, but this is after Ryu's been hounding Gai, and Gai's reaction is like ours -- "Oh, brother. Let's show this nerd!" And he fires off two billiard balls towards Ryu and -- what's this? Ryu spins around and catches 'em. There's more to this Ryu guy than meets the eye...

Now, I like the Ryu character as written, but I wouldn't rank him amongst the best Reds because I think Koutarou Tanaka is too bland and weak of an actor to really pull this character off. Yeah, Ryu is supposed to be a square, but there's supposed to be a lot going on with the character internally -- that this guy is hurting and masking it with a sense of professionalism. This is a Red who has to deal with the most unprofessional and half-together team in the franchise. Tanaka's only capable of playing the Dudley Do Right part of it, and he has no presence, and he makes it so much easier for Toshihide Wakamatsu to steal the show. When, if you look at it...Ryu's a bigger bad-ass than Gai. He's always calling Gai on his ****, he's always one-upping him. He's technically the better fighter because he's a professional soldier. But you have the flashily written Gai, shoving in your face the superficial things that's shorthand for "cool," and he's played by a talented, charismatic actor. After casting Gai, they needed to look at Tanaka and realize they made a mistake. They needed someone who could match Wakamatsu.

I agree. At times, I think that Toshihide Wakamatsu who played as Black Condor should've been Red Hawk, & Kotaro Tanaka who played as Red Hawk should've played as Black Condor, just like Jyunichi Haruta should've been Dyna Red & Satoshi Okita should've been Dyna Black.
