I remember reading an interview the director about a month after TDK's release, saying that he thought he could make Wolverine better by making it darker, just like TDK. Whether that means that the team was editing it to seem like that in post-production, or if he was joking, I don't know.
You misinterpreted that interview which Gavin Hood only had very little part of. It was in response to Tom Rothmon wanting to make the Wolverine movie less gritty. Hood and Defamer.com argued that audiences can accept a gritty movie like the Dark Knight. He didn't say the movie would be more successful if it copied TDK, he just thought it shouldn't have been washed down to make it more kid friendly.
And TDK wasn't really darker, just more realistic and serious.
