May Tokusatsu of the Month - Ninja Sentai Kakuranger - Discussion thread

Caught up now!

So....no one did anything about the floating bunch of buldings in the sky or the people turned to stone? I'm sure Japan would hav called in the US to bomb the island or something.

So, that bad guy is Tsuruhime's (seemingly) dead father. Damn girl, sucks to be you right now. But at least she had Blue Beet and KirinRanger (or Black Beet if your prefer) to play with as a child.

Amd here we go! (Kakurei DaiShougun) Ninja Megazord! I expected it to be the first mecha, since it was in MMPR season 3, but there ya go.

Oh, and Rito got his ass killed and Master Vile got released.

Getting close to being caught up...

25 -
- Chapter two go!
- That scroll has got some funky power and...yeah, I never realized just how much the costume Reika is wearing looks like what Mei wore.
- Was the whole...ditzy/naive cute girl thing popular back then? Seems like Reika is pretty much playing upon all those cliche from anime.
- The fourth wall breaking by the monsters is one fo the more interesting aspects of the second half, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and...it didn't really work here! Seemed so incredibly out of place.
- And thus, Sasuke grew to hate cute little bunnies.
- Amusing as I think it is that Kakuranger so readily kills allies, I think I would have liked Reika sticking around for a little longer.
- Love seeing Sasuke so worked up, lead to a pretty neat fight scene for as long as it lasted.
- And there we have probably my favorite mecha cockpits ever, they're pretty simple but very elegant.

The first half of the episode moved a little too fast for me, but I really liked the second half. These episodes do a lot to show and give the team new resolve and really help set the tone for the second half of the series. It's also very interesting to see episodes where only one or two members of the team are present throughout, helps to add an interesting dynamic to the traditional Sentai story. It's also funny that Reiko Chiba gets to show off more personality here than in 50 episodes playing Mei. Oh, Zyuranger, what a strange and boring series you were.

- I remember really liking this episode because it starts to set up a lot of the major plot lines for the second half of the series and we get hints of that pretty early on.
- I think it's rather cool to see Tsuruhime having to prove her worth as the heir to her family's name and the leader of the Kakuranger. The whole challenge comes in at a pretty good place for the series and helps it have a bit more of a point to it..
- w00t! Product placement.
- Man these fake Kakuranger can be really weird, but Tsuruhime's reactions to them are awesome, especially liked seeing her have to grab fake Seikai after he started walking in the wrong direction.
- I remember being surprised the first time that I saw the show, wasn't expecting the fakes to have human forms. I guess it helps drive home Tsuruhime's attachment to her friends and what she'll do to protect them.
- That is definitely one of the oddest looking power up mecha ever, it just doesn't seem to scream powerful in any way to me.

Loving this set of episodes so far, though they're generally focused on single characters, I think this one managed to show the others in a way that made sense for what was going on. I kinda of wish Sentai had more episodes like this, for some reason I think it could add a nice element to the story.

- Right into the action, glad to see this episode didn't waste too much time getting started and this is actually one of the more amusing ways an episode tells us what the demon is based on.
- Nue is a pretty tough little bastard, poor Seikai and Saizou, the only two without a huge importance, getting to deal with him all alone...and turned into frogs!
- The make up for this episode really must have sucked for these guys to wear.
- Nue's always been a bit of a bastard, playing on fear so easily like that. I'm glad that the boys didn't fall to that fear from the get go.
- Yeah, I'm sure there's some commentary there about all the people making fun of the two when those shells formed on their backs.
- And they're falling into violence now, poor boys. But! At least Seikai realized how effed up he was, and all it took was bricking his friend in the head.
- Nue would look more impressive if he weren't beating around two guys cursed to look like poorly done up turtles, if only there were some epic event that would change this...
- God I love these grunts, they're some of the most lively I've ever seen in Sentai.
- ...there it is, Nue looks like more of a badass now!
- Ah these two mecha do not lend themselves well to solo action, especially God Logan, I'd say this is probably one of those things that aged really badly.

Another good episode, fun and fast paced like most of these, we got a good idea of what kind of character Nue is going to be and saw a pretty impressive take down of Muteki Shogun. I guess it also shows how strong the new set of mecha are if they were able to hurt the guy so easily. I was hoping Seikai could get himself a solo ep here, but I guess they wanted to make room for the big two parter that everyone seems to talk about when they think of Kakuranger...

...which I think I shall write about tomorrow! Those two episodes definitely deserve a special post of their own, I know some people didn't totally like them, but I think what they have to offer in terms of presentation, story, and fight scenes is great.

28 / 29-
- I like the heroes being able to run into monsters so randomly, it sends home the feeling that they're actually all over the place and really makes the ninja theme seem that much more awesome.
- Hey, American flag in a cowboy town, I wonder what that could mean!
- I have to wonder if Sho looks back on beating the crap out of Kane and enjoys it, what with their feud and all. :P
- Oh man this is some really weird English. They never do hire Americans to play Americans, do they?
- Annnd there's the big reveal we've been waiting for! Really makes Jiraiya's story pretty tragic, I'm surprised that they gave it to him and not Sasuke or Tsuruhime since it's odd to think of red's not getting the best stories.
- Sentai needs more guys who can fire balls of energy.
- Oh man, seeing Sasuke come out of nowhere with that gun in a cowboy town is hilarious.
- I think it would have been cool if Sasuke didn't transform, but I guess it just shows how much stronger Gali really is and gets Jiraiya ready to fight him without hesitation, especially once Jiraiya himself learns Gali's the one that killed his father.
- That weird...laser pushing scene was...odd.
- They really love showing us the death of Jiraiya's dad, don't they?
- Hot damn, Jiraiya's really on top of things once he grabbed those claws.
- Man, you really gotta feel for Jiraiya. First his dad is killed, then he finds out the guy who took him in afterward was the killer and is out to killer him. It's no wonder he broke down and couldn't kill him off.
- That is...an unfortunate crash scene.
- So everyone basically gets a tragic story here, Jiraiya loses two fathers, Gali gets sent into servitude for Nue and then does the only thing he can to get himself out of it after training Jiraiya all his life for it -- lets himself get killed. Even if Jiraiya didn't deliver any singular decisive blow, he did accomplish what Gali wanted him to.
- And everyone's back together, yay!
Would have been neat to see Nue taken out by the new formation rather than just the pieces, but it does show how freaking strong these things are.
And now back to that city in the sky no one has done a thing about!

These episodes are not for everyone, but I love them. I think you really have to be into martial arts films in general to appreciate them for what they are – basically abbreviated martial arts films. These two episodes give us a lot of standard cliches in that are of film, the dead family member, betrayal, search for a great item of power, and a pretty great fight scene. Sho and Kane have some great chemistry on screen, I've got to wonder whose idea it was to bring in Sho to play Gali, I'd like to thank that person because it really worked out wonderfully. The presentation could be a bit floppy, such as the scene that shows us what happened to Gali's daughter, but I really like it for what it is. I'm always fond of those episodes that don't have a lot of transformation and in suit fighting for some reason, especially in Sentai, they feel a bit more special and stand out to me because of that and these episodes shine through thanks to that, you get to see how kickass Gali is supposed to be and you get a pretty viscous fight scene out of it.

In general, this was one of the more "man, sucks to be you" set of episodes I've seen Sentai give us. No matter what happens, someone was going to have to give up something dear to them, and in the case of Jiraiya, he had to do that and learn he was lied to all his life, all sorts of conflicted feelings going on right there.

Thus the first arc of the second half of the series finally comes to an end! The heroes have their scrolls and their new mecha and now they have to deal with that pesky city in the sky problem. This entire arc was probably my favorite from all of Kakuranger, it accomplished everything it needed to. The team encountered problems that gave them new resolve to protect people and keep the fight going, as the title of this half of the series implies, they're all gone through some of the toughest fights they've experienced and things are just beginning.

30:
- Back to the castle! Time to bring that city down since no one else wants to do it.
- God Logan, you shall forever look weird in battle to me.
- Some guy dressed in white armor, who ever could this be?
- Well I'm sure Tsuruhime didn't expect that. Time for another fatherly bond to crash and burn!
- These brothers show up in every tokusatsu I see these days.
- The good professor returns from...wherever the heck he's been!
- Hot damn, Junior's got himself some daddy issues.
- They remembered the random kids, yay!
- Yeah. They're in trouble. He is kicking ass and taking names.
- Into.A.River. Why always into a rivier?

I am loving this string of two parters, they all seem to take the story somewhere and really serve their purpose quite nicely. Hakamenrou is decked out in some very nice looking armor, would have been interesting to see the rangers get a power up along the lines of that.

31:
- Sandaiyuu for the save! Nice to see him a bit more useful for once.
- Ohoho, he's been keeping the truth from Tsuruhime.
- Yeah, Tsuruhime, don't transform and help or anything, it's not like he's getting his ass kicked by the second strongest demon in the world.
- Well now that's a pretty brutal death. I didn't actually expect for him to be killed off when I first saw the show, he seemed like one of those happy go lucky guys that would always be safe.
- Ooh, a new toy. That thing looks pretty toyetic, but still kinda cool.
- Junior's got himself a power up, guess everyone can tell he's about to bite it.
- I have no idea WTF was up with Junior's death energy thing
- Oh, Yugami, your death was like your role, short and pointless.
- This is actually a pretty sad death scene for a character I didn't care for too much, loved that bit of him reaching out to Hakamenrou.
- Hey, the Kunoichi, haven't seen them in a while.

And he's back! End to a really good set of episodes and I love how much of a game changer it seems to be for the show, old characters out and new ones in, and in totally unexpected ways as well.

The website is back up, some else took over. There are also a few links in the media matrix in a thread started by a guy named specspi.

Anywho I am way behind, have been uber busy lately, sooo...for now these reviews! Going to try and marathon my way back to being on schedule tomorrow, or at least cutting my lateness in half.

32:

- And now Daimaoh is back and creepy as ever!
- This episode must have aired at around the time the Japanese equivalent of Halloween was going on.
- Something about having the monster just talk to the audience like this really comes off as a poor replacement for the narrator
- Oh, Saziou, you and your crazy ass plots
- Yeeeah, this little collection of faces is definitely creepy, but still reminds me of something that might have happened in the first half of the series.
- That's what you get for spying on ninjas!
- Poor Saizou, always getting the crap work
- There is just nothing going good for Saizou, first he has to take that brat home, then she makes him get his face licked.
- Haruka, you just had someone violate your face and steal, don't be happy!
- Oh man, those anime face masks are so freaking creepy, I know you admire that manga princess and all, but wtf
- That fantasy is at least seven kinds of wrong
- Is it odd that the human actor is like ten times more creepy than the monster suit?
- Oh, hey, you realize you're weird now, that took longer than it should have
- Nice trick, I remember thinking wtf happened to Jiraiya's hair the first time I saw this episode
- This is a really fun fight scene, seems a lot more energetic and colorful than the last few episodes
- Ah, 90s Kageyama, always a thing of beauty

Even though this episode seems like it was placed a little oddly into this point of the series, going from something as dramatic as the previous one, I expected a few more episodes of falling action. Not the best episode, but I guess for a Saizou theme one, it could have been worse. These are the episodes that make me believe Kakuranger does what Zyuranger tried to do with the kids of the week approach but a lot better because the core cast of characters still have pretty awesome personalities most of the time.

33:
- Kitty! That is all.
- These guys do not have luck with signs at all.
- Saizou's reaction to being over the edge is hilarious. His actor would have been a cool Junior.
- Well, gee, lucky thing that our catbus can fly!
- I love how d-baggy the people here are.
- Kosuke totally won't be part of a great plot.
- Sickles have got to be my favorite weapons.
- Well that's what happens you laugh at trapped spirits, damn youngin'!
- Sure, let's eat the first mushroom we see, that can't possibly backfire!
- I love how over the top Jiraiya seems here, almost as if he's parodying Bruce Lee.
- They have got to use those weapons more often, they're really nice to look at
- Yeah, throwing rocks at the giant monster is totally going to get your grandfather back.
- A one armed Kakure DaiShogun is just one of the more amusing things to look at that I've seen in a while.
- So the cat was the kid's? I was actually hoping the Kakuranger would keep it the first time around.

Fun episode! Pretty good for mostly filler, we get to see a bit more of Daimaoh and what he's been up to and get to see some of the people Sasuke knew in the past. I like when a lot of the guest characters of the week are integrated into the story this way, makes them seem a lot less like throw aways.

Ooh nice, I am trying to do the same myself, I've had a pretty busy week and it's been killer on my Kakuranger watchin', so I've definitely gotta try to catch up tonight and over the weekend.

35:

- Man, Tsuruhime is so good at playing that she hardly needs to blow air.
- Wow, the references in this episode are obvious from the get go.
- ...they're even playing music from its soundtrack and everything!
- Hot damn, new clothes looks decent now.
- These are the sort of plots I was hoping for the Kunoichi to pull off earlier in the series, seeing them out in modern getups.
- I think I totally remember Mebius using that song the children sang. It sounds so sappy.
- For as lame as using kids seems to be for Daimaoh, it was a pretty decent plan until the team decided to go with the copy Tsuruhime.
- OH MAN. They're even doing the exact same entrance from that show.
- Hey, Sailor Moon stuff.
- Pretty neat ending, though I have no idea what the text on screen says.

So for those not in the know, there was a tokusatsu show that aired the year before Kakuranger called Three Action Sisters and it was the last show in the Toei Fushigi Comedy franchise (anyone know why it ended?), there were three heroes in the show, of course two of those were the guests in this episode, the other was...Tsuruhime! This episode seems like a big tribute to that show and I am sure I missed a lot of homages.

36:
- And now some weirdness starts!
- Yeeeah, sorry big D, Ninjaman's still going to be just the slightest bit ticked off at you.
- You know, the kids in Sentai usually bother me, but this little girl is pretty dang adorable.
- Ninjaman is a lot of fun to listen to, even when he's just trapped in an urn.
- Evil Seikai is the only one who can actually pull the look off. :P
- Nice to know Ninjaman cares so much about kids, despite his totally radical demeanor.
- Ouch, that was a pretty harsh punishment for being tricked.
- Dude's a bit more nobel than the series would have you believe from the way he carries himself.
- Hakamenrou saved Tsuruhime, dun dun dun!
- Oh snap, don't insult his color scheme!
- Just look at that state of the art CGI.
- This guy looks pretty cool in all his forms and that Samuraiman suit is the sort of thing giant suits should look like more often.
- Annnnd it took Daimaoh long enough to declare he'll kill the Kakuranger.

It's interesting to see an extra warrior added so late into the series, and I'm wondering why it didn't happen earlier. There were a string of filler episodes and I'm sure one of them could have been done away with to introduce us to the awesome Aoi Nisai earlier. Gotta wonder why Ninjaman wasn't made into a Ranger after two years of additional Rangers joining team. Anywho, good episode, I love Ninjaman's character, a little rough around the edges, but he truly cares for the people he tries to protect.

Kaku has had a impressive third act i have to say. With weridness, turmol and awesome fights. Tsuruhime having to deal with her fathers fall to the dark side (as it where) was one of the finer points i think.

I thought that we might be in for a early end in 44, but Master Vile there just ran away to his Fly Skull with his Konoichi Ho's.

I expected Ninjaman to be like this based on what i heard, thought i thought he would enter the show alot sooner that he did based on how much he showed up in MMPR season 3. And i wonder why Saban didn't make use of the Konoichi-Gumi as Evil Rangers.....

Ok......when did the Kaku's cross the 'branie into Christmas World? X_X
The Christmas Episodes tend to be a little strange. I perfer Mini-Skirt Santa from Boukenger myself :anime:

Also: Santa Sentai Klausranger!

Well, 46 sure is Random O_o. It's chocked full of Absurd weirdness, like the Ghaom Zone from B-Fighter. I recall there being a PR Dino Thunder Episode like this too (Trapped in a Comic plot device).

Poor Saizou, getting stabbed in that ass is the least of his worries.
