Those seasons did more right than they did wrong. That's why you keep hearing criticisms. I know WF isnt perfect. But I fucking love it anyway and its my favorite season. No Disney season has come close. SPD almost did it. I loved SPD. But beyond that, the Disney seasons have been bland.
Sure, I love NS, DT, SPD, and MF. JF isnt bad. But we're going to call them out on what was wrong and how they are far from perfect compared to the older days of Power Rangers.
Umm... No, they
didn't do more right then they did wrong. The Saban years were and remain vastly overrated by the older fans who grew up with them. There's a reason why most of the ranger actors from that time period aren't acting anymore. And why a fair number of people associated with those shows aren't in the business anymore.
The only two things that separate the Saban era of Power Rangers from the Disney era have been larger seasons and Saban basically gutting the Sentai to use the footage as they saw fight. The former is largely irrelevant because don't always equal better quality, the latter is what the older fans are upset about.
Saban gutted various sentai to tell their own story, which most everyone would argue was a plus. However, when they did so, very frequently the quality of the footage didn't mesh with what they were doing and you ended up with a product that was obviously lacking. See Lost Galaxy which abandoned Gingaman's setup and concept to take place in Outer Space and for that reason amongst others, it just didn't work. The random horse showing up out of nohwere, Captain Mutiny, etc... Didn't work out well, Now the US only stuff was good but trying to mix that and the Sentai stuff, it just didn't blend and hold up.
Disney's approach was to more or less, localize the Sentai for a Western/American audience. That means more if not all of the aspects and elements from the original Sentai are retained but there are changes, just fewer in number. Example Ninja Storm, 3 kind of Ninja student screw-ups become heros and along the way they are joined by 3 more friends against evil Alien ninjas. Now it worked, it was very similar to Hurricanger but not quite the same. Was it as different from the source as a Saban era PR would have been? No and that's where the problems began for the fandom. Saban probably would have given us two girl rangers (Navy Thunder) and a whole other host of changes to the series. Disney didn't and we got a series that retains a lot of the original Sentai flavor as a result.
Dino Thunder was an attempt I think by Sloan to combine to the two approaches of Saban (Mesogog) with Disney (no extra Rangers) and you can kind of how judge just how well it didn't work by Sloan's disapparance and the complete abandonment of the Saban style, Disney didn't even bother trying to incorporate it into itself.
Then you have the last four series: SPD, MF, OO and now JF using the Disney approach. The internet fanboys largely dislike the Disney approach and dislike the company for reasons already stated (IMO) so yeah, they're not going to change anytime soon.
I just don't see where the hate is coming from. To me, the older I get and the farther removed from watching the Saban era as they aired, the worse and worse each season gets in quality. There are just whole episodes that make you cringe now with the quality of the writing being almost PSA-tastic. I think by and large people should decide whether to embrace Disney's approach to PR or just stop watching because it's not changing and they really don't care what the 'net fans think anymore.
That's just my opinion.
