So this guy, who was on record for being Japan's second oldest man at 111 (Born July 29th, 32nd year of the Menji era, or 1899), it turns out was a mummified corpse for the past 30 years.
The local government, seeing that this guy was still on the roll's as alive, went to give him a gift for his Birthday. His 80 year old daughter refused to let them in, saying that her father wasn't seeing anyone anymore. His 53 year old grandson later went to police and explained everything.
In 1980, the man, then 81, chose to become a Sokushinbutsu. That was done by Monk's in northern Japan who starved themselves to death in a small, dry place so as to cause Mummification, so as such they would become a "Living" Buddha to be worshiped if successful. (if it didn't work and they just decomposed, they would still be revered for their dedication)
The cops have started an investigation because it seems the man, who has been dead for the past 30 years, has collected over 10,000,000 yen in pension since he died.
