It was originally gonna be a sequel, but Ed Norton rewrote it to sever ties with the original, which many people didn't like. I think it was actually a good choice.

Good god, Iron Man was awesome.
You know, thinking about it, the script for that movie is great but not that great. It's a testament to John Favreau, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow that the movie was as great as it was.

There's a comic out today called Ironman in Vegas (or something like that), which is a sort of sequal to the movie as it's written by John Favreau and drawn in the same style as the movie. :buttrock:

Not bad. I didn't think Iron Man was that popular but it's good that it is.
I fucken hate RDJr. But he did a stellar job in this flick. I think he was even more cool than Bruce Wayne at times. Yeah, I wen't that far.

Tony Stark is way cooler than Bruce Wayne. 
So, is it true that Marvel did this movie all on its own, without companies like Paramount or 20th Century backing them? And if so, what were the advantages of that? My brother told me they had more freedom with teh script. But how was it different than say the script from Spiderman, as far as liberties go?

I saw Iron Man last night, can't really add to what been said before but damn was it great. When I first heard Robert Downey jr. had been cast I my first reaction was "Why?", but after thinking about his history and the character history of Tony Stark you kinda start thinking, "You know, this could work". And it did, I can't think of anybody who could have played Stark like Downey did. And Jeff Bridges was excellent as the villian. You couldn't ask for a better cast IMO.
Well I think the have a release deal with Universal, but as for the benefits I would say they do have more creative control. best example I could give you is when Iron Man was under a major studio, I think it was Sony but please somebody correct me if I'm wrong, and they were trying to get, and I think had at one point, Tom Cruise for Tony Stark. Granted the script at the time fell through and the project was dropped, and after watching it I'm grateful it did. Now I don't know how Cruise would have done, he might have been pretty good, but Downey was Stark in my eyes.
Another example that come to mind was the studios forced Raimi to put Venom in Spider-Man 3. And the executive in charge at the time saying she thought the studio would stop the franchise at three even though Raimi has said he had enough ideas for 6 movies. OF course the amount of cash 3 made probably changed her mind.
Now Marvel had more say in the recent movies than they had in the past, but they were still at the mercy of the studios backing the picture. And some movies were green lighted that probably shouldn't have been. Ghost Rider for example, I enjoyed it but I could see where some of the complaints were coming from. To be honest Marvel, while having more control than ever before, has to realize it's going to be a double edge sword. They can take all the credit they want when it does well but they better be ready to take it on the chin if one of their movies bombs big because they're not going to have anybody to blame but themselves. Just my two cents

I never like him, but I agree with you. He did a great job as Tony Stark. Seriously, Robert Downy Jr. IS Tony Stark. :thumbs:
