HJU Adventures - Episode 2: "When Did You Realize... You Were Different?"

i liked power ranger but it didnt struck me that i was ageek... not until i watched anime and such... and know im more of a half geek cuzz i watch more j-drama's then anything and consider it in japan its normal to watch those kinda series at this age, but in the west its mostly consider it as geeky (among otaku's) but at a whole diffrent catergory.

Stage 1: 3rd grade, when I realized that I had more in common with Sir Percivale from my King Arthur books than with 99% of the people I knew in real life.

Stage 2: 8th grade, when I realized that I had more in common with Wesley Crusher from ST:tNG than with 99% of the people I knew in real life.

Stage 3: At my wedding, when I had the wedding party introduced with the opening theme from Conan the Barbarian. :buttrock:

Good question...was it when I used to wake up at around 6 AM to catch saturday morning cartoons...or maybe when I used to spend more time playing LEGO in my room...or maybe when my mom started to complain I was too old for cartoon? Or when I started to draw my own Beast Wars character and stick them to my wall next to my bed, to the point where I had WAY too many of them... hmmm...or in sixth grade when it became accepted fact by the whole class that I was the 'smart guy' you could reliably go to for random trivia?

After a while it felt like I always knew that I was different...however I don't think I felt like I belonged in the 'geek' grouping until much later in my life.

The first time was probably around kindergarden or first grade or when I was about cartoons or comicbooks and I realized most of the other kids (well the boys anyway) were more into football. Which would have been fine accept apparently not giving a **** about football made me the biggest dork ever.

..I still don't give a **** about football.

The second time was later on in school when I found other people who liked comics only the catch was that everybody else was heavy into X-Men, Wolverine, Punisher, etc. and I was the one guy into Superman. We could agree on Spidey though. We also all got into Jademan Kung Fu comics around the same time and some of the early manga to hit the shelves like Heavy Metal Warrior Xenon.

The third time was when I started to feel like I was one of the only superhero fans who didn't think they needed to be all about darkness and deconstruction or "realism". I never really felt a big need for them to be "realistic" neccessarily because the fantasy to me was always part of the friggin point. Also as a related "feeling different" thing I just never really had a problem with good guys being good really or that justice prevailed in stories.

If I had to peg a fourth time it was probably when I got into tokusatsu and I knew there were some of my friends that I would just never, ever be able to convey my reasons for liking it to or even have a snowballs chance in hell of getting them into it. But that's ok because eventually I met plenty of people who did get it.

I don't know it's kinda weird. I think to some degree even among fandoms for things I like I don't exactly fit in wether it be comics, or anime or whatever.

When I was in 7th grade and bought Ultimate Spider-man number 1 and Coming home comics I knew after reading those that I could never give up comics and realized I was a total and complete geek.

Yeah, it was probably when I would rather be on the playground pretending to fight monsters than play soccer with the rest of the kids.
