bio: Carl never did have any luck. He came closest to having some as a young boy, when he managed to get any schooling at all despite his poor family upbringing; he had no mother and with his father's lack of money and debts to unsavories, he, his three brothers, and his father of course lived in the car rather than a house. That and he had to find his own dinner every day, often resorting to digging in trash cans.
He dropped out of high school and started working to help his father pay some debts that were starting to tighten their grip on the family, but he had quite a few problems with keeping jobs. Places would close, more qualified folks would replace him, or he'd get in an argument or mess up in some way. Though at times it wasn't his fault - one woman had him fired for stealing her watch, when he'd found it in the street and planned to sell it for money for the family.
he always did have a problem with wealthy people. They had so much, but refused to give anyone else a thing, even when they needed it. he would often imagine the good things he would do for the world if he were rich...but that soon turned into long daydreams of the easy life, and being able to live just the way they were. Sometimes he did consider stealing, but he never had the nerve.
It wasn't just money that he dreamed about. It was also women. He had never had much luck with the ladies - he wasn't particularly handsome, and he was poor. Even the rebellious girls didn't like him, because he'd always lacked the edge that they expected from a boy with his upbringing. He considered trying to be more of a tough guy, like the men his father owed money to. He imagined the women he could get if he were wealthy. He wished he looked like some of the men he saw on the street.
It got worse over time. He would look at his callused hands and at his face in the mirror and hate himself. he would curse god and his mother and father for his existence, and he would curse himself, wishing that he could be someone else.
One day, he came to the small, run-down apartment that his family had been staying in for the past few weeks and found it broken in to. Everything, such as there was anything there, had been destroyed, and what's more the place was empty. Carl never saw his father or any of his brothers again.
Without that push, he became less and less interested in working. He would just watch the people go by and imagine his life as that of any of the others.
finally, one day he was sitting, leaning against a wall. he was very still, and he felt rather weak. He wondered if he was going to die today. Everything started to go dark, but he could see one person. a woman in white, very clearly. She approached him and said something to him. He couldn't follow her words, but something about her.... When she handed him a strange belt and some keys, he took them obediently, without thinking. A loud honk of a car's horn in the street and he was back to normal, awake and alive and feeling oddly refreshed and strong, still on his street corner though still holding what she'd given him. He stared at it for a long moment before getting up, thinking that he had something important to do now.
