Now, that I don't remember. Lynxara brought up Kiva in another thread and made me realize how little I remember from that show since I thought it was a stinker.

I love the '80s, I love horror and the Universal Monsters -- I should have loved Kiva, but...man, that show was a job to watch. And "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" was more horror than Kiva was.

You know, after I watched the first episode of Kiva... I wasn't on the forums them, but I just walked around kind of irritated all day, and everything I heard about what was going on in the show irritated me, too.

I really think you've nailed why I felt so frustrated with Kiva when it was in production. I just couldn't believe Toei had somehow turned the show's appealing concepts into something I didn't like to watch.

I really wish Toei had instead worked with making the show more of a modernized Black, with more Raimi-inspired direction and more edge to the atmosphere. Not Garo levels of scary, sure, but at least more menacing.

I remember thinking it would have been cool if Toei filmed the '80s portion in the style of their '80s tokus, namely Black. I think it would have been a funny little comparison between Showa and Heisei styles. Have Otoya be a stand-up guy like Koutarou, in comparison to Wataru who was the typically "soft" Heisei lead. But Toei wasn't concerned with even making the '80s portion believably '80s -- yellow phones, playing a pop song here and there, and showing the dog as a puppy was supposed to be enough.

Shougo's still waiting for a cool, consistently kick-ass and thought out horror-themed tokusatsu series. GARO let me down, too. The Next was a joke, like if those "Epic Movie" guys made a "Japanese Horror Movie" movie.

Man, G3 gets a bum rap. He only sucked when it was Houjou in the suit. Hikawa ended the series being told by one of the Els that he seemed superhuman -- that should count for something!

Kiva cheating on the appearances of things in the 80s portions of the show cheesed me off, I have to admit. Sometimes the fashions got into the right ballpark but the hair was almost always wrong. Extras tended to be unconvincing, too.

While I love Garo to death, it wasn't really a horror-themed tokusatsu. It was more a gothic atmosphere laid over pretty basic henshin hero stuff-- kind of like how Castlevania these days is a gothic atmosphere laid over Metroid or God of War or whatever.

I wonder if the problem with getting a true horror tokusatsu is just that so much of toku is produced with child audiences in mind? Even Garo felt more like a show for fourteen-year-olds than something really adult, for all that it had a late-night timeslot.
