Galaxy Express 999 Complete Series on DVD

I don't know how to say this, but the reviews are bad. I actually have a copy, but I haven't opened it.

The reviews have been saying that the video quality is that of the online streams.

The box itself is a cardboard sleeve, two discs, and a medium thickness plastic film that goes over it. On the box, it says "Episodes viewable in Japanese language with English subtitles." which to me looks very shady. It does not say "Closed Captions (separation) English" or "Audio (separation) Japanese". The box also has the "DVD video SET" logo on the front which looks like that Gamera double feature that I got at the 99 Cents Only Store which some dude on eBay was selling for ten dollars. The reviews say what I was hoping wouldn't be the case.

The subtitles apparently are encoded into the video.

I'm disappointed.

I think that I will send it back for a refund. It cost me $50+ and I don't want to support such a poorly made release. I'm cancelling my other pre-order as well.

I wasn't expecting that.

People will stick to the streams now. The one benefit of the DVD is the portability.

I know I all ready said my thoughts, but it REALLY upsets me that they would treat such an iconic anime this way... What were they thinking?!

You know, I often want to show support by buying the things that mean something to me. That's why I often try to buy Tokusatsu and any Japanese live action movies at my local DVD stores. But I've been stiffed many times in ways that make it hard to support the things I love. There is the controversy with the Ultiman DVD sets here in America, there is the fact that sometimes we don't get the complete movie or a quality translation in the subtitles, and more...

It makes me NOT want to buy the DVDs, but at the same time, I want to show my support for the things that need it, for the things that the fans really want so that we might increase our chances of getting more of it.

Maybe one day, this anime will get a better release. For now, I am deeply sorry for those who have been ripped off.
