I got this fun fact about Jack Kirby's Ben Grimm/The Thing from comic-book artist Scott Shaw! (co-creator of Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew) on August 27th on his Facebook account!

People often refer to the Fantastic Four's Ben Grimm AKA "The Thing" as "the orange guy made out of rocks". (The FF's Human Torch once described Ben as "a walking pile of peach pits" -- then promptly got clobbered!) But according to Ben's co-creator, the late, great Jack Kirby, he's NEITHER! Joltin' Jack once told my friend Pete Von Sholly that the Thing is "a super-strong gorilla covered with dinosaur hide"! Cool!

That's awesome!

It makes sense, considering Godzilla has had a sort of brick-like texture, only the Thing is orange, not grey!

The Thing from the 1994 Fantastic Four movie probably comes the closest in description to the comics version!

Pfft. The cartoon Thing TOTALLY debunks Jack Kerby's "description" where when Ben transformed into Thing, rocks flew towards him and covered him! "Thing ring, do your thing!!!!"

:P

Here's another fun fact about the Thing:

Kirby based Ben off himself and his own history.

Dan Turpin, over on DC, usually seen w/Superman (as he's in Metropolis police) is an homage/self-creation of Kirby as well.
