A sexy hi-tech thriller with some surprising twists, the new film Renner starring Frankie Muniz delivers on suspense and gorgeous futuristic visuals. Stylishly directed by Robert Rippberger, with screenplay by Luke Medina and Martin Medina, based on a story by Luke Medina, Renner is coming to theaters in the United States on Friday, February 7th, 2025 to dazzle audiences. Let’s throw out the obligatory hack, “This is not a biopic of the life of actor Jeremy Renner” joke and instead move directly into the career of Frankie Muniz. Of course he starred in a series of Agent Cody Banks films in the early 2000s. But, most television viewers know him best as Malcolm on the beloved FOX sitcom, Malcom In The Middle. While this could typecast the actor in roles meant for precocious youngsters, it’s actually a plus when it comes to the story of Renner. Cyber-Sheen Aesthetics Enhance the Storytelling Plot: A computer genius invents an A.I. life coach to help him find love. Too late, he realizes a mistake. He accidentally programmed his manipulative mother into the code. There is definitely a surface level reading of this film where Renner is just an older version of Malcolm, a […]

Find the plot disturbingly realistic. We already see how biased algorithms are today, so an AI based on an overbearing mother doesn’t even feel far-fetched—it feels inevitable. I wonder if the movie digs into the ethics of AI and how much of our humanity gets transferred into the tech we create. If it does, I’ll definitely be interested. If it’s just another thriller with neon lights,

If this movie delivers on the tension and revenge elements like the review suggests, I’m in. The whole buildup to a tragic but satisfying climax sounds right up my alley. Also, any movie that has a punchable character like Chad, who eventually gets what’s coming to him, is a win in my book. I don’t need deep philosophical themes—just give me good performances, a well-paced story, and some brutal payback.

I totally dig anything that vibes with Blade Runner, Tron, or those cool cyber-dystopian looks, so Renner has definitely caught my eye. According to the review, the world's future technology is not fully explored, which is disappointing, but I can overlook that if the tale is fascinating. A thriller with AI themes can be fantastic if done correctly; just look at Ex Machina or Her. If Renner can add something new to the genre, I am all for it.

I’ve been waiting for Frankie Muniz to get a role that lets him really show his range. People underestimate how good he was in Malcolm in the Middle—his comedic timing was sharp, but he also handled emotional moments really well. This seems like the perfect project for him, where he gets to play someone smart, awkward, and emotionally complex. I love seeing actors break out of their childhood roles, and I hope this is the start of a real comeback for him.

I love that Renner seems to take a different approach to the cyber-thriller genre. The AI concept alone is intriguing, but what really has me hooked is the comparison to classic noir. The way the review describes Violet Beane’s character and the dynamic between her and Muniz makes me think this could be one of those hidden gems that gets better with repeat viewings. Also, Marcia Gay Harden as the AI mother? That’s a casting choice that practically guarantees an amazing performance. I’m all in for this one!
